Hey yall, I know there is a non trucker woman's section but I really need help from drivers and not their wives for this. I can't think what to get my hubby for Christmas but he keeps talking about getting him a new antenna.I know absolutely nothing about this stuff. Any idea of what would be a good one to get him.

Need more info, antenna for a car or pickup or big truck. What kind of radio does he use. Maybe who he drives for will help narrow it. There really is not a one fits all answer.

The first two things I want to say are 1: I do not recommend any antenna that is shorter than 4 foot in length if the antenna does not have a loading coil. 2: bewarned that antennas can be a real subjective topic. In other words, I would give cash and let him make the purchase. If he screws it up.....well it ain't your fault.
...
Honestly, it will depend upon how much money you want to spend. If you want to spend less than $50, I would suggest the following:
.
.Firestik FS or KW series 4 or 5 foot length.
.Wilson FGT series of 4 or 5 foot length.
.Francis of 4, 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 foot length.....
If you want to spend more than $50, personally I would give him cash and let him buy what he wants. If you get the wrong antenna, this would be a no win situation for you. -
He has a Cobra 29, he drives for Prime, drives a freightliner and is right now only working with the manufacturer installed 3 way antenna, only gets about a 1 mile rang. I thought about just giving money but Santa don't leave money he gives presents. We have a 4 year old and have to keep it realistic. As far as money I don't know what a good antenna goes for. I really just know he wants one and he wants it to be able to go on his current rig and which ever rig he decides to buy, so I guess he wants it interchangeable between rigs.

A new antenna won't help. He needs new, high quality coax as well. If I drove the same truck all the time, I would run new coax to the factory antenna on the left side of the sleeper and install as long of antenna as I could get away with. I've posted a link to a thread I started about the Cascadia antenna problems that might help.
FWIW there is a CB shop just a short distance from Prime Hq in Springfield, MO. It is at Hood's Truck Stop, exit 61 I believe on I-44. He does installs and does them well. He is a honest guy and a good technician as well. He has been doing radio work in this area for 30 years or so. His Dad did commercial radio work here and he learned from him. Call him and set up an appointment to install new coax and a antenna on hubby's ride. It will be done right and he will be happy happy happy!
