watch out with those ground plane kits on a 4 wheeler. You need to have the whole antenna above the car for it to do anything. If someday in the future look around for somebody selling a Wilson 1000 mag mount with or without a ground plane kit on it. them suckers rock on a car and the 8 spoke GP kit looks cool! lol

 

Really?? Thanks for the advice.... its not gonna hurt at all if i use it though will it? But anyway im not so sure im going to use it anyway. My New radio / antenna set up the SWR hangs out from about 1.1 to 1.4

 

Anything below 2 is considered acceptable for general CB usage.

Of course if you can get lower you want to get it there

 

Ya but no you wont screw anything up. just picture this... an antenna in the middle of the desert ok. you key it up and start talking the radio waves go from the antenna out in larger and larger WAVES large arching waves ok. now put it on your car, right smack in the middle of the roof. the antenna now "thinks" thats the ground so the waves are equal all around the car. put the antenna on the right rear bumper well the waves are shorter going over the car. to the Left front, longer where the ground is. so artificially you get a stronger signal toward the front left of your car.

What you do with a Ground Plane Kit is artificially make the waves shorter and "supposedly" get out further. but depending on where it is in the first place could make it block waves. so try it and see what it does but I would recommend you buy a simple SWR/power RF meter from Radio Shack. about $10. Use it to check your SWR then Take it off!!! then have put the antenna in the top of it and have a buddy key up while you check your power all around your car.

This is also how skip works...the atmosphere creates a temporary "ceiling" and waves are shorter and go farther.

also make sure you have 18 feet of coax. and keep in mind the best antenna you can EVER have is a 9foot whip. period anyone else tells you different doesn't know what they're talking about. All these other antennas are just mimicking a 9ft whip! it's the most efficient and UGLY of all! lol

Ok, thanks, i have a 91 jimmy... its a chevy blazer pretty much.... ive got a 4ft wilson silverload with just over half the antenna over the roof, I do have an 18ft coax... i get out decently far now.... depends on where i am, but i caqn get out probably 3 or more miles in city type areas, and not all that sure how far on highways, i do know its pretty far though, so....
what it seems like to me is that having the ground plane kit would cause ... something like a cliff effect for the ground... ive got ground at 7ft.... and again at 3 ft... with the wall inbetween the two, .... kinda seems like i wont do any better for getting out infront of me.... but behind me may increase.... But like you said, trial and error seems to be the way to go.

And although ugly those magnet mount 9' whip antennas are the way to go. if i didnt want the big beefy look id go for one, i know a guy who gets out well over 10 miles average on a ... scenic curvy tree side highway. they are great.... but so ugly...

 

Absolutely true, you have the perfect attitude to be a CB'er! LOL The best thing is trial and error! and patience they are very important.

I've never seen a magnet mount 9ft whip! wow most of the ones I've seen you have to mount with bolts on the rear quarter panel and you have to drill a huge hole under the mount and yes they are very unsightly! although I had a 89Jimmy 4x4 and I had a Wilson mag mount with a gp kit, nearly impossible to find those gp kits anymore, I thought it looked pretty cool up there on the roof. course I had the CB mounted up on the inside roof like a 18wheeler too so it was really easy to do that way. anyway, just keep on trying and learn as you go. this is a great place for the beginning CB'er ! well the ground plane kits can be found online... either the kit... with the cables. and all that or just the little "Star" thingie.... but ive only really seen those on ebay besides that very scattered.

 

I bought my Galaxy 95T from xxxxxxxx.xxx, they charged me for setting it up for 27 Mhz (which is move one jumper) They charged for there super peak and tweak plus shipping.

Not to mention that they did none of the above work, I had Jerico in Bakersfield add the jumper and tune up the radio. Radioactive never broke the seal on the box. The radio was a stock when I recieved it, untouched.

Talk to drivers in your area that you like the way there radios sound and find out whom they used. Buy locally at least it increases your odds.

As far as first radio I would agree that a Cobra 29 with Galaxy finals thats tuned will perform dollar for dollar probably better than anything else around.

Antenna (s) there is no reason to spend 100.00 or more on an antenna for a normal cb radio. a antenna tuned to 1:2 to 1 or better will work better anyway. Monkey Mades and alike are wide band coverage antennas unless your running an export radio it will not help you.

A good noise cancellling mic is money well spent, like a Turner Road King.
