Just took the Tech test last week - still waiting for my call sign to show up on the FCC database.
If you are consistently in the 85- 90 percentile you will do fine.
Yes, it is a good idea to learn some of the theory and not just memorize the correct answers.
Make sure that you read the questions carefully! Some of them can be a bit tricky.
I used the Gordon West Tech licensing manual and highly recommend it as a study guide.
Good luck!

I just happen to want to finally get my license and I got an 85 on the first practice test before ever looking at any of the questions. I think I get the theory! Just need to polish up a bit before test time.

Some might not even consider me a truck driver anymore since I drive LTL P&D and don't have a radio in the truck. This will be for I n my personal vehicle and maybe a HT in the house. I just miss talking on the radio.

With your background, I highly urge you to take a look at the General and Extra class questions. You may well be close to passing those even before you study.

Or do what I did and just buy one online....for a little extra $$$ some even offer a free kicker for your mobile as proof you passed.

My tech ...I just cheated like that....who cares...
But my General I actually bought the study material...because HF is what I was really interested in. -

It is best to understand the theory but many of the questions due require memorization (like bad edges for each class, mode restrictions within each band, ect) so you really need a mix of memorization and theory.
I recommend doing practice tests for all 3 class licenses twice a day and then looking up the information on the questions you did get correct, you should be able to pass at lest the General exam doing that for 1 month and probably thr Extra as well. The Extra test is the only one that is really any challenge IMO.L.B. Thanks this. -
If, for example, you pass your Technician and Extra exams, but fail the General, you will get your Tech license and a CSCE (Certificate of Successful Completion of Element) for the Extra, which is good for one year. When you pass the General, hand them the CSCE, and you'll be automatically bumped up to Extra.
Some VE teams will tell you that you have to pass one before you can take the next. That's BS; they just don't want to futz with the CSCE.L.B. Thanks this.
