Bought a used cobra 29. Claims to of had a peak and tune. It's definitely getting out there and receiving well, based on talking to a few fellers out on the skyway. Having two problems.

When adjusting the volume knob, the radio will cut out. You have to adjust it just right to get it working. Does it need to be cleaned and/or replaced?

The CAL option for the multimeter doesn't seem to be working. When you hit the switch for calibration mode the needle falls to the left and does not move on key up. Same with SWR. The needle does move on S/RF. Will the meter not work because of the peak and tune?

Other than that, radio seems to be in good working order.

I proper cleaning might help it, if not, then replacement. I'm not sure on your meter? It has been awhile since I had a 29, and even then I never used that feature opting for a more accurate external SWR meter. The peak and tune shouldn't cause it to not work. My brother uses his built in SWR meter, on his 29, for reference purposes and his radio has been peaked and tuned to the point he gets accused of running a amp, or having a twin final export radio! (If you run south from KC, I know two good shops that won't rip you off that can fix you right up.)

Replace the volume pot, cal pot and the meter.Should not cost any more labor, the new meter would need to be adjusted anyway, Parts should be less than 25 buck off ebay.

I wouldn't bother with the calibration pot or meter. It's not that accurate anyway and I would highly recommend using a real swr meter. A good cleaning might very well fix these issues

Go to ebay ... order some Deoxit D5 (little can) and when you get it, open the radio up, look for the volume pot opening and spray a little in it. It is dirty so it needs to be clean. You can do the same for the cal pot but why bother, it is pretty useless.

Ok, I'll get on the interwebs for a swr meter. Do you get what you pay for when it comes to these meters? I was planning on getting a cheap $10 one.

Lol, went on Amazon and the first comment said, "fixed crackling volume knob." Sold!

Yes in a way, but try it with the $10 meter and see what happens, don't be too inclined to think the numbers matter, in a way they do but what does is getting that meter to its lowest point on channel 20. Once you get to that lowest point, look at the numbers.

Got a can of the deoxit, removed the volume/squelch knobs on a 2950 that had intermittent sound issues. Sprayed the pot and into the little hole. Rotated it back and forth a few times and made sure any excess had drained. Had the radio on most of the weekend without having to tap volume knob for sound to resume at any time.

Lot's of times when shops P&T a radio, they lower the radios DK so people can run them safely with Amp's...By doing this, some radios won't have enough DK to calibrate the SWR meter...Cobra 29's usually need at least a 3w DK before the Cal knob will work right...And on the Cobra 29 LX radios, a low DK can show Fail when using the radios diagnostic check settings...
