I have a Cobra 29 limited cb, stock coax, stock mic, and factory antennas. I'll ask for a radio check and drivers tell me it's working great but I have a hard time understanding drivers sometimes. Also I don't get any distance out of it either. I always have my cb on and like to communicate with other drivers (not talking crap or being a cb Rambo).
What should be my first step to improving my set up? I just want get get some distance and improved sound on the feedback. I don't want to say money is no object but I don't want to go over board and blow a ton of money if I don't have too. Thanks
It is a company truck so I can't get too carried away

Try having it tuned and peaked. Also have you swr set on your antennas.
-
I did have the swr set correctly by a fellow driver but he said get new antennas I don't know what kind to get. I'm finally getting comfortable enough driving, I want to work on my cb/communications with other drivers

Stock mics IMO, not the greatest, try astatic mic, and a higher quality coax with Wilson antenna's

If your not already using one I would suggest a external speaker to help you in understanding other drivers.

All good suggestions. Most CB shops will check your SWR. Not saying the driver didn't know what he was doing. What was your SWR reading. Don't do the peak and tune unless you are absolutely sure of the tech that does it. It is not necessary anyway. A good antenna system,(Buy one good top loaded antenna, and new coax)noise canceling mic, and external speaker should be all you really need.
Floorguy1 Thanks this. -
How much does it cost to have cb tuned?
-
$20 for CBs and about $40 for the export radios..........that is probably the low end of the price range and based on what I think the tech I uses charges.....more or less. I've been quoted $50 - $60 for a Galaxy type radio at different shops I've walked into out on the road.......these were known "hack shops" I was just checking them out for fun. I posted in another thread here the other day about two different shops whose "tune-up" consisted of just removing the mod. limiter. A $50 tune up they claimed!!! It is definitely "Buyer Beware".
You don't really need to do anything to a CB for it to work well. Although if you know a good tech, it doesn't hurt to have it "peaked and turned", I always do. You might as well have it doing as good as it can do as doing only 70% of what it can do. But, when it comes to the export radios, most of them are not converted and set up right that I've seen. (again, unless you know a good tech) I know there are a few shops out there that do them right, but the fact is most of them don't. That is why I don't recommend any newbies starting out with a export radio until you learn a little bit, and know who to buy from or take your export to for service, or your probably gonna get ripped off and end up with a deaf splatter box.Last edited: Jan 13, 2015
