Took two radios to my technician friend, for a couple of drivers I work with, that needed some minor attention. Both Galaxy radios. One had been purchased at CB City in Texas, I think they were around Tyler but no longer in business now. The other radio was purchased from a CB shop just west of U.S. 69 on I-40 in Oklahoma. They were both sold as converted, peaked and tuned.
Both radios peak and tune consisted of cutting the limiter and nothing else! Neither radio and been realigned to 11 meters and were pretty much deaf. What a rip-off!!
Happy ending now though, repairs were made and a proper peak and tune and realignment completed! Loud and proud as they say!
Typical CB Shops?

This is why it's important to educate oneself about radios. Not saying you have to become a tech, but learn enough so you can ask the right questions.
For example, if I found myself in an unfamiliar shop I'd ask what all is involved in a peak and tune. If I heard the words 'clip the limiter' or 'spread the coils' I'd know the guy was a hack and would politely thank him for his time before beating a path to the door.
Also look around his bench. If you don't see an oscilloscope and some type of service monitor, that's a red flag. If he's using anything other than a Bird wattmeter to show output, that's a definite red flag.
I hear a lot of shops advertising on the air and many of them sound horrible- distorted and overmodulated. If a 'tech' can't make his own setup sound good- or they think it DOES sound good, despite what they actually sound like- then steer clear of them. -
Mike's tech is good that's for sure. He set me up with some great equipment and lovin it !!

Been off the road for 8 years, getting ready to go back. Are there any good CB shops left?
Is the one in Effingham at the Petro still good? -
I know one that uses mainly a Bird watt meter. His radios sound pretty good too and he has been around for 30 years or so, with many repeat customers. But, he grew up in radio repair working for his Dad who did "real" radio work on business/commercial stuff. He can fix them when they are broke too. Probably why he has continued to thrive. That, and he keeps a good retail selection of all the popular radios. He is my 3rd choice of the ones I know.
