Hey, everyone. I'm looking to get into ham radio and I'm looking for antenna recommendations and installation help. I'm in a company-owned 2012 KW T-660 and I can't make any permanent modifications to the truck. The truck currently has dual CB whips on the mirrors and the original wiring strung through the mirrors, which I would like to keep as-is. I am going to be purchasing a TYT TH-9800, it's a Chinese clone of the Yaesu FT-8900R. It does 10m/6m/2m/70cm. It has only one antenna connector, a 259. I'm looking for the simplest install possible. I would prefer a quad band antenna, unless there are no good ones out there, then I'd consider multiple antennas, but I don't know the first thing about diplexers. I'm hoping for a mirror mount solution, but I want to keep the stock CB whips on and I don't know how to get to the mirror arm's hole to feed the wiring, plus it has "California style" mirror arms. I'm NOT looking for super-power-boosting ego-trip equipment. I want to run this legally and am going to get my license very soon.

What type of antenna(s) to get all 4 bands?
How can I mount on California style mirrors?
Is there an easy way to get to the mirrors "tunnels" to feed wiring?

Check out the Diamond Antenna website. I think they have what you want.

The Diamond/Comet/Maldol multi band antennas don't hold up well on a tractor trailer. I used to run one of the Comet multi-bands that you could put a few HF elements on, and have run diamond/comet 2m/44o antennas for over 20 years on trucks.
They just don't hold up well to occasional whacks from tree limbs. If you mount one, make sure you put it out of the tree limb danger zone, and check the set screws on the antenna sections often. It's no fun looking up and seeng half of your antenna gone, and they're not cheap.
Most of the mounts they sell for them whether PO or NMO, don't work well or hold up well on a truck. The radio store salesman will try to sell you one of the diamond/comet mounts that work ok on cars, usually with the expensive, lossy coax package.
(174?) I gave up on those. I usually make my own, buy a suitable cb mirror mount bracket that will work on your truck, throw away the 3/8x24 crap mountng thing, and drill out that hole and insert a decent quality UHF 'Bulkhead' adapter, with a few added lock nuts. YOu can now thread a PO/UHF mount diamond/comet/maldol antenna onto the mount, and use decent quality coax with a standard PL259.

I have a question. Why a quad band? It's a FM radio. You won't find much on 10 & 6 meter FM. Also to get on 10 meter FM you will need a General class license. Because 10 meter FM is above 29.500. And Technicians can only talk on 28.300-28.500Mhz which is USB. I feel Quad bands are a waste of money. A Dual band may be better.

I agree with Big_m, if you only have a technician license get a good duel band (2 meter / 70cm) as there is very limited FM traffic on 6 meters and you cannot use 10 meters FM at all.

Even if you have your General or Extra I would not get a quad band as both 6 and 10 meters have very little FM traffic, I would get an all band all mode radio (IC7000, IC-7100, FT-897D, FT-857D) so you could get on HF as well as VHF/UHF and use SSB on 6 and 10 meters as well.

Thank you for all the replies! I understand the 10m and 6m bands are pretty much useless on FM and with a Technician license. I was more interested in using those bands to listen (which it CAN do in AM) to public service and businesses. The TYT TH-9800 is the same price as the Yaesu FT-7900R which is only a dual bander and doesn't come with a head unit seperation kit (the TYT does come with it).

I'm still not sure if I want to get a Chinese clone radio or go with guarenteed quality and get the Japanese Yaesu. As far as an all mode all band radio goes, I'm not quite ready to invest $800+. As far as an antenna goes, I found a Diamond SG7500A (a dual band) that I'm thinking about getting and I found a cheap mirror mount bracket with a PL259 connection. The SG7500A should stand slightly shorter than my CB whips and I rarely hit any trees with those.

I have a KW T-600 and have a Larsen NMO2/70C mounted in the factory right hand mirror position using a thick NMO mount and doing a little work on the bracket hole with a reamer. I doubt a stud mount or homemade adapter (to avoid hacking on the mirror bracket) would be all that much more to rig up. It's taken some pretty solid tree branch strikes and has held up well. The mirror itself tends to protect the mast. Think about it - most branches will get smacked out of the way by the mirror before really hitting the antenna mast on the bracket. The few that are over the mirror will be high enough on the mast for it to spring back. About the only drawback is it's center loaded thus a little top heavy, so leans way back in the wind with any substantial ice buildup. I have it hooked to a Kenwood TM-V71A and the functionality has been excellent.

On the left mirror I put a Wilson 2000 and have it hooked to a RCI 2970n2. To be honest, I have had a lot less free time to explore 10M than I thought I would when I bought the radio and would have been fine with the Cobra 29 it replaced. Having had that experience, I am definitely not in any rush to get upgraded to general class and buy a higher end HF radio and figure out a more complex antenna solution. Someday I will. It's just not high on the priority list at the moment.
