Cause they like to annoy the rest of us!
-
I bumped the switch and don't use talk back so I can't hear that it's on.
-
Much as I hate them, they do have their uses. If covering a great distance through noisy conditions they can be helpful.
Most of the time though they are just annoying. Especially those multi-tone ones, or those that are about 10x louder than the voice transmission.
They have absolutely NO place on SSB. Stop using them there. -
A Roger Beep gets them an extra $.10 a mile in pay and elevates them to Super Trucker status.
M818 and jessejamesdallas Thank this. -
Rodger Beep's are installed on CB's mainly for the Mexican Market...Them little senorita's down south wouldn't know what to do without one.
-
Almost forgot: Some say that they are used so 'good buddies' can find each other....
scottied67 Thanks this. -
Beep at the end of transmission was made popular by NASA who used it for indicating the intentional end of transmission.
hatlesstrukr Thanks this. -
It's used to piss others off while getting your jollies. You should have seen the last radio I had with roger beep. As an experiment, I performed a mod on the board by replacing the timing cap with a higher value. The beep was 18 second long, and I kid you not.

I never have beed fond of the "roger beep" although I've used one on occasion, mostly for entertainment purposes (just horsing around). But I ran one of these on the last base station I had matched up to a HR 2510, an excellent mic with a unique "roger beep" selection.
