I have a Cobra 29 lx cb just out of the box with a k30 mag mount antenna. I had the swr on channel 1 at 1.2 19 at 1 40 at 1.3, Watched some vids on opening it up and adjusting VR4 for 100% modulation. So I did that and bought a tc300 linear which is suppose to do 150 watt max. Hooked it all up and dont seem to be getting further then 10 miles. Can anyone suggest what might be going on I know its all hooked up right. Sure hope I didnt get ripped on the linear either. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks CloudNine

Your SWR is very good. But part of the problem is the antenna. It's too small. What type of vehicle are you driving? Where is the antenna mounted? Is there many hills/mountains where you are? And with CB you are not going to get very far anyway.

And remember, even though you may be running 150W, the vast majority of people on CB are running stock radios, which means no more than 4W. So, you're limited by the range of the people who are talking back to you. When running ground wave (which is what you're doing), the terrain has a huge influence on your range.

Yessir! Antenna and terrain has a lot to do with it. As well as the set up everybody else has.

Thanks for your replies. I have this setup in my ford f150 antenna is mounted on the roof. There are some hills not huge and a few trees. I understand most are talking back on a stock 4watt radio and I dont expect to talk to them long distance but I have a buddy that ahs the same linear setup on a wilso 5 k antenna and we couldnt talk 40 km's. But I'm going to replace my k30 with a wilson 1000 in the next couple days and try again. Any other suggestions are appreciated. Thanks CloudNine

You say some hills? The Wilson 1000 may or may not help do what you want because of the terrain. What is not huge to you can be to your radio. At less than 25 miles could still be normal with your radios. Cb is really not a long distance radio most of the time. You may do better getting your Ham radio license for more distance.

Ok but regardless I'm better off using the Wilson 1000 over the k30 antenna tho right?

Yes you are. But after running the Wilson 1000 and 5000 for 17 years I find that the Sirio 5000 blows the Wilsons away. I've run one on each van for about 2 years. And I see much more range over the Wilsons. About a 5 plus mile increase to everyone that I talk too! Many people now think that I'm home on my base when I talk. They cost about the same price of the Wilson 5000. They are very tall about 78" and very broad banded too!

maybe consider having a real radio tech match the linear to the radio.

Did you actually talk to someone who you know that you can trust to tell you how far they actually are?
