My buddy was saying when he turns up his rf gain on his cobra 29 lx and hes outside in the open it shows no bars but when he gets close to his shop or puts it inside the bars show up again. What could his issue be? He tried 2 cb's and it did the same to both. He can hear me fine as I called him from 25 miles away and he could hear me with my linear on of course.

RF gain is to cut out all the background noise and interference. The bars you see is a measure of the strength of the signal in Db. No bars means no signal is being received, so if this happens when he turns up his rf gain its working just fine, unless I am misreading your post. Does he turn the gain knob counter or clockwise?

Is he turning the right knob? If so, he might have a bad antenna connection (but receiving you that far, I doubt it). Squelch knob can also do it, depending on where he has it set.

We have tried 3 different cb's all do the same no Rf gain when he turns it all the way up. But yet he can hear me from 20-25 miles away. What is his issue. Please help it's driving him nuts. Yes he is turning it the right way and no matter what he does with squelch he gets no bars on the rf gain

No two set-up's will be exactly the same regardless of equipment...

Ya I'm wondering why he has nip rf gain bars tho no matter what way he turns the knob. Is it antenna related?

The squelch knob would play a part in this scenario. Going indoors could cause the antenna to be picking up electrical interference also.

Also the fact this happens with multiple cb's would suggest its either the antenna or coax problem. Or, that there is nothing wrong at all and this is simple paranoia.

Did the same person set up all three radios? If he can here 25 miles doubt there is a problem. All the radios I'm familiar with have a meter adjustment inside.
