To start off this is my first time ever messing with a CB so pardon my ignorance

My company recently got us a new Freightliner M2 straight truck and since I run primarily interstate thought it would be nice to have a radio. I picked up a Cobra 25 Classic at a garage sale for $20, figured it would be a good start in case I mess something up. It's pretty old but the lady said it works so we'll give it a shot.

Anyways my truck does not have any CB provisions unfortunately. Not even the factory mirror mount and dash power that I see on a lot of them. I'm not really looking to do anything fancy, so what would be my best options for antennas? I see the firestik kits seem to have good reviews, would I be ok with just 1 or should I run duals?

Also, the power harness that came with it is pretty butchered so I'm likely going to order a new one. I'd like to just use a cigarette power adapter for the convinience but would I be better off hard wiring it?

If anyone has done a setup in an M2 Post pics! References are nice. Thanks for the help

My cb power in the dash doesn't work. The ground wire came loose and the shop didn't want to rip up the dash to fix it. So I got those 12v road pro plug and made cb work using the 12v. Easy alternate [IMG]

For the antenna, but a mirror mount (singular), a 15' coax run (use the clear/gold one) and a 5 foot whip stlye antenna either Francis or Firestick. Run the coax thru the wingwindow to the radio. You can use a cigarette plug for the power. And away you go to get started.

Alright, so I bought a 4' Firestik tuneable antenna, bracket, and coax and mounted it on the driver side mirror. Since I can't open the little window on the door I ran it through the door in a place I made sure it wouldn't be pinched. I know little about CBs but when I key up the meter goes past 4 on the radio on all channels, and based on some quick googling that's bad. Any ideas and what would be causing this? Do I need to run a ground wire to the antenna or something? Thanks for any help

Tried running a ground wire to the antenna to a ground post on the chassis, ground to the radio, played with tuning screw on antenna, moved antenna around, no matter what the SWR is over 4 on the radio. Seems to receiving decent though. Any other ideas before I find a CB shop and just let them mess with it?

Better late than never; the mirror is mounted to a fiberglass door-skin - no ground.
You absolutely need a ground wire.
I am currently shopping for a new (single) antenna for the top of the cab, magnet mount.
Had the same issues on my 2004 Freightliner M-2 and gave up.

The more I read it seems maybe the Firestik NGP setup will be my best bet for something relatively simple, without having to run 9000 ground wires around to get it somewhere close. The doors on mine are metal as a magnet will stick to then, but everything else seems is fiberglass. I wonder if the aluminum box is going to be an issue with this reflection I'm reading about?

Again I'm not looking to broadcast halfway across country but being able to respond back to guys running close by would be cool. Right now no one hears a thing no matter how close they are.

Hey racemaxx, the cobra 25 classic doesn't have a built in swr meter. You can pick one up at most truckstops for under $20. You'll also need a short coax jumper, 3ft or less. Get ya a meter, check swr on channels 1 and 40. If swr is high on channel 1, your antenna is too short. If it is high on 40, your antenna is too long. Since your antenna is tunable, make adjustments as necessary. If swr is 3 or higher, you most likely have a grounding problem.
Good luck with it, cobra 25's are good lil radios.

Isn't the meter the gauge in the top left corner? It always goes past 4 when I key the mic

Yes, that is the meter. The cobra 25's meter has rf power and s signal, no swr function on that radio. Unlike the cobra 29, which does have the swr function. You are probably reading the rf power.
