Heh - fun fact about Radio Man: you can hear (and even make out, if listening closely enough) every word he is saying across all 40 channels on most days. That's how BAD his workmanship is. One day I was talking to Dave down on 2, and yes, I could make out exactly what Radio Man was saying on 19 at the same time. Pretty sad. And there are actually people who swear by the guy. That's even worse.

But yeah, Dave (DTB) is in the back of this Sunoco station.

I run 81/76 on a daily basis, so I can identify Radio Man immediately. He loves to start his spiel by asking for a radio check. I usually respond with something like, "Overmodulated and too much echo. Sounds like The Radio Man." I imitate his cadence and inflection, and it generally shuts him up for the next ten minutes while I roll through the area in silence.

Well, as silent as CB can be in an area with three truck stops...

Most of the drivers I know can't tell if they are dealing with a knowledgeable tech or not and don't know much of anything about a radio or an antenna system. It is not surprising there so many hacks out there making a living off them.

I've only found 3 technicians in Pennsylvania that know how to use an oscilloscope.
DTB @ exit 52 and Charles Roy in Harrisburg.
The third used to work for Bob but was fired for stealing.

Bob has a nice inventory but he isn't much of a technician. David Bupp is a good technician for barefoot radios only. He won't tune a radio with an amplifier on his oscilloscope though.

This is incorrect. I always use my 'scope when matching a radio and an amp. The only time I can't match them on the bench is if the amp will draw more current than my bench supply will handle. In cases like that, I have the customer hook his setup up in his vehile while parked as close to my antenna as possible, then pipe his signal into my 'scope via a separate coax connection. It allows me to see his signal almost as well as if it were on the bench.

What is the make and model number of your power supply on your bench?

I agree, plus he can only sell what he has as well, which is why I asked about his power supply. Without a power supply able to power my equipment, it would be impossible for him to tune my equipment. Again I reiterate, he is a great repairman, and for tuning small radios within the limitations of his power supply on his
    bench, DTB does great work.

I can't remember if I've mentioned it in the past or not (certainly not in this thread) but I bought a Cobra 29 LX before I knew better of what shops are good and what aren't. Needless to say, it got "hacked 'n jacked" rather than peaked and tuned.

Awhile later, I noticed that the radio had a hum in the background if I talked constantly on it for more than a few minutes.

Brought it to Dave (DTB) and had him take a look at it. 45 minutes, $20, and quite a few component changes later, it sounded like a totally different radio. A week later I ended up talking to a guy from one end of the Indiana toll road to the other, and in that ~2.5 hours, no hum in the radio. I ran that radio until I bought my Stryker, regularly getting compliments on the quality of the audio.
