I run it because it gives me much better performance and range then a regular CB. I use only three channels on it. 19, 13 and the "farm" (still within the 40) channel. I have yet to find a regular 4 watt cb that will perform and reach out half as far as my connex will and that is using a properly setup antenna system. Simply stated, unless solar activity is up then 4 watts does not cut it any more on the regular cb 40. With the digital age upon us, there is no reason why the power limits on CBs can not be lifted. This would make the use of the illegal 10 meter exports drop since people will beable get what they want in a regular CB. The tech would also improve on the CB radios at the same time. This would make regular CB radios much cleaner operating. Yes I know that you can talk pretty far on 4 watts but that is only when solar activity is at its peak and it does not help on more local transmissions. I have talked from North Dakota to Tennesse on 4 watts using skip but could not get past 10 miles locally on the same day actually the same hour. |

Using the idea that the digital age will somehow slove CB problems is not going to fly ..... If you rased the power to 100 watts for CB the exports would go to 200 watts .... It's NOT the power but more than the 40 cb chs that people buy exports for ... you want power buy a linear. PLEASE ..... WHAT TECHS ....... In 1982 the FCC ended the need to have a GROL ( FCC LICENSE ) to repair CB radios so techs were cut loose to do as they please with no recorse by the FCC or you the owner. The rules were changed to make the OWNER/USER of the radio pay the fine ...you can not sue the tech if you get a fine ..... You MIGHT get the FCC to go after any licenses he has but that would not be under Part 95 and an't going to save your skin ..... NOW ...... ALLOWING new narrow band modes like PSK-31 or even a D-star type digial ... HUMMMMM that might be worth looking into .... The FCC today is very digital savy .... |

| I am not talking digital Cb transmissions. Does AM CB transmission interupt Digital tech that is out there today? Not likely. Everything is going digital these days which means that higher powered CBs are less likely to interupt things. |

I have been on 6 meters ( TV CH1 ) since 1966 ...... If you know anything about 6 you know it is a nightmare to keep out of coardless phones and TV's .... I am licensed to run 1,000 watts but stay under 100... and even at that level even digital TV get wacked ..... sadly they are the same old part 15 junk ..... The FCC lowered the standard for a 200 watt ham license to a 35 question test it is very unlikely they will give in to any requests ..... |

I actually run an export for the receive quality and the large meter. I'm sure that for a base, the approved type CBs have great receive, but the volume level fades out with signal strength, then blasts you out when a truck passing you starts talking. I don't have the patience to fool with my radio going down the road, so my Galaxy 99 works out way better for me than my Cobra 29. There are a lot of drivers that run exports instead of getting a linear because they only want a little more power and built in echo or aren't allowed to run a linear in their company truck. I know that argument doesn't hold as much water as it used to with the Mosfet finals putting out as much as the old dual-final radios, but having everything in one package ends up being more convenient. And thank you, btw, for your knowledge and good advice and talking to us man to man, that's what I was talking about before. |

| THERE IS a reason NOT to increase [power for CB---actually several of them. If EVERYBODY ran the 4 watts instead of wanting to be like King Kong beating his chest on top of a building, you'd have LESS noise, LESS interference, and less NEED for additional power. It is the very USE of higher power of amps and radios with more than legal power (the exports and illegally installed ham radios being used on CB). that CAUSES the noise: the squeals, the howls, that "roaring" noise you hear when "skip" is in!!! It is the mistakenly unregulated environment of CB that MAKES all that racket. As Bruce has already said, CB should have been put on 220 MHZ YEARS ago. It would have prevented people from trying to work "skip" because it doesn't happen as often, they could have added more power (say 15-20 watts) for reliable comms, and there would been less interference. ARRL missed the boat on this one because, tho they got the use of 220 MHZ for CB shot down, part of it was later taken (primarily UPS), and the hams lost part of it anyway. The irony of it is, UPS rarely ever used it. Putting a radio service in prime DX territory with untrained, unknowing operators (CBers), and then further de-regulating it was a result of when FCC became more dominated by BUREAUCRATS than by electronic engineers! So the problem is one of lack of knowledge/understanding of how RF works, how propagation affects ones radio usage, and a lack of regulation and enforcement. Adding power would only make things works not only for CB, but for the surrounding services as well. (shudder). Hams, for example, already have CBers with cheap, splattering amplifiers bleeding on 10 and 12 Meters, if not outright showing up ON 10 Meters without license! And THAT p---es us off as is!!!!GF |
