That’s the sad part you spend good money on your radio and some unlicensed repairman with little training if any leaves you with a pile of parts ......
You have no recourse in most states since the FCC does not allow a state to set repair standards ..... and the FCC abandon them in 1982.

agreed....Its crazy the number of hack shops out there anymore..
Buying used is a crap shoot as well I've been burned on two pretty high dollar (756 Pro II and TS-2k) HF rigs also...I won't even get started on the crook that sold me the W2IHY gear !!!!!!
I've settled in on one radio man for 11m and only buy new for ham stuff anymore..

Bad rx basically...bought it off some ham on QTH I think it was..
The HF receive was usable but the 2m receive was real bad I could only get the strongest local repeaters.....my buddy Mark thought maybe a lightning strike or something ?? I ended up selling it as is on ebay w/bad rx and took a small loss....Radiomart bought it the running joke around here was it went from bad rx as is to mint condition once Martyn at Radiomart got his hands on it !!!
The Pro II worked fine and was a good radio it just didn't show up in the condition it was advertised in....The pics looked good he sent me but some of the scuffs and minor scratches were not picked up by the sellers camera..I like my radios in mint condition !!

YES the RF stage on 2 meters is not set up right ! KNOWN PROBLEM !
You can mod it with a resistor change or buy a new board from kenwood or do what I did buy a killer preamp
KENWOOD DENIES THE PROBLEM EXSISTS HOWEVER THE REPLACEMENT BOARDS ARE GOOD TO -130DBM .....

My buddy Mark I spoke of knows a ham in NJ who does electronics work and fixes radios on the side he is suppose to be really good on the TS-2k...I loved the rig maybe someday I'll buy one new if I ever get the itch to work HF again and let him work his magic on it....All my HF gear went bye bye when I was unemployed and to be honest I was really turned off on HF by a select few on 10m....Now I just work 2m from my pickup with a FT-7900R and I really enjoy that..

Are you looking for REPAIR or to buy ?
Your best bet is to stick with a larger shop like SPARKYS or if you need repair send it back to a factory shop.
The problem is most smaller shops Just don't have what it takes to fix radios and the ones that hack them up
are just that hacks .... They are happy to modify your radio into a pile of parts.
You can't tune or fix a radio with a $50 meter or some junk gen you bought off ebay ..... To fix a radio RIGHT you have to have equiptment to CERTIFY it back to FCC spects and many don't even know what that means.
I have brought this up before there is no training or license required to call your self a tech ....

I have used R&R in Wilmington for over 30 years that was when I had to drive 50 miles to get work done now i live near them. I found that they are not always the lowest price but the service is worth the few dollars that i would save buying somewhere else. I have never had any problem with any mods that they did for me. And any other problems that came up was fixed fast and right The old time service is worth it. When compared to the price at a truck stop it is like shopping at wall-mart. Some people do not like what Dustin dose but when on the road i always get complements on my equipment and have been offered good money to sell it on the spot.
