hey guys Im looking fo a great CB that also packs some power in TX/RX. what are your opinions. I know i will get alot. and I also am curious on the antenna. after all a radio is only as good as its antenna. while out on the road i run across guys who can really over peg the swr meeter. most have a Connex but im sure there are others. so lets here some opinions. I like to be able to talk with adriver for more than a half mile down the road traveling the oposite direction. also are there any amps out there for these CB's and what antennas will hold an amps power?
powerful CB?

k, well thats a lot of questions....
first if you want to save some money, a nice radio is a galaxy series, either the galaxy dx949 or 959 are both legal CB's but that is no fun.... these legal CB's can be opened and made to push between 20 and 30 watts safely, with out frying anything inside.
As For Antennas, any Wilson antenna will handle all the power you throw at it, as will most antennas on the market. Wilsons are great, and have so many to choose from, easy to tune as well.
Amps, i hope you didnt wanna save money when it come to these, their are many to choose from, a High Drive Texas Star 500v is an awesome amp, their are a few smaller ones, some palamar amps are great for regular AM chat, and arent too powerful. and are kinda cheap.
those are my thoughts.... everyones going to have their own. -
well i appreciate the comeback. I just want a radio that stands a chance at a decent conversation with a driver for a bit. you know you have those times where you get to talkin to a driver for a long while and then they get off for a few minutes and they are gone and ya cant even finish a conversation enought to say " Have a god one" "Keep them rubbers down"

Looks like we are neighbors, I am in the Twin Cities South Metro as well. Look me up sometime on one of the local channels when you can..SIXX -
any radio with dual finals will be a strong radio. If you are gonna put a linear on it the dual finals do not matter. A Galaxy is a great radio to go with.

My Stryker works great and comes with variable power if you are going to add an amp so you can adjust your dead key! It looks great also!

Whatever you choose, make sure you ground out those antennas really really well. You will be very disappointed in RX and TX if you dont. Not only that, but you will burn up that radio within a year if you dont. Ground Ground Ground. You can get away with it in a stock radio, but nothing with some balls behind it.

Be sure to buy 2 of whatever radio you get. Especially if you want to talk to someone else for over a 1/2 mile.
Give the second one, to the other driverSGTSmokdU Thanks this. -
Gearhead, radio should be the last thing u concentrate on. Make sure you get good
antenna( I use Wilson silver load with adjusting tip and Wilson 2000 as back up). Than
make sure you get good coax. For single antenna, use 50 ohm with 90 %shielding. For
dual antennas, use 75 ohm coax again with 90%shielding. Use 18 feet length coax. Get a
good mount for antenna and find a suitable place for it(sometimes the mounts provided
are not the best choice. Especially with the fiberglass bodies) Your antenna MUST HAVE
A GOOD GROUND. Also remember when you have excess coax, do not cut it or coil it up!
You can fold it into a figure 8 or use up the excess by stretching it around your cabin.
Just make sure it is away from electrical if possible. Then get a radio of your choice.
Take it to a reputable cb shop(avoid the butchers, they will only suck $ out of u and
mess up your radio) and tune it and get your antenna/s matched...and you r on your way
After ma galaxy 99 craped out on me, I purchased cobra 19 at as my "emergency" cb.
Out of a box with out tuning it(just antenna) I get up to 10 miles on it ))
Remember radio is not the most important in the set up. If you don't have good antenna,
ground etc. then even the best of CBs will not get you the performance you want. ))
P.S. Get a good microphone. One of the better one is Road King 56. Excellent and worth the $.
