In 1999, my Cobra 29 with the weatherband nearly caused my wife to wreck. Shortly after installing it, she took my p/u to run errands. I thought she was safe, as the radio was off. When she returned home cussing a blue streak about that "damned loud screeching", I realized that turning it off did no good. After that, the only way my wife would ride in my truck is if she saw me unplug the power cord.

I spoke to a radio tech about disabling the screech, and he wouldn't touch it. Something about federal law, either FCC, or the weather people, (I forget) frowned on that.

i THINK if you turn the channel switch to the left all the way, it will not do that.

I think on my Uniden, if I have the WX turned off(on the dial) then I dont get the tones. Ill have to look into that.
Im a Storm Spotter and Chaser so I use the WX alot, and I have it on my scanner and it also broadcasts on my HAM thru the OEM frequency, Ive got lots of sounds in my truck when weather is around!

I have the 29, NW, ST, WX in my truck and you can turn the weather alerts off by switching the WX channel selector to the OFF position (all the way to the lef) It will also mention it in the instruction manual which is available online if needed.
