Does Texas Star DX 1600V damage my Peterbilt 379's computer or alternator?

Hi guys i am new to this website.I have a question for all of you who can help me out.I just bought a Texas Star DX 1600V to use with my Galaxy DX 959.I was wondering if i hook this up to my Peterbilt 379 with a 190 Amp alternator, does it damage anything in the truck such as truck's computer, alternator, etc.... If it is properly installed?or any suggestions that you can make..Is too much power would ruin anything in my truck..I am recently running Palomar Elite 900.

That kind of power COULD ruin the electronics if it is not installed properly.

Use quality coax, Times Microwave LMR-400 and short power cables and run all power cords AWAY from the electronics as much as possible.

Question is will the 959 have enough power to drive that amp?

Thank you very much for your reply,yes i have this radio of mine set up properly to drive my TS 1600V.But i was scared that this set-up will ruin the truck's computer and the alternator.So what you r saying is if i use the proper cables,it wont damage the components of my truck.

Thanks again for the instructions. i will follow them.Also i have another question for u, if u dont mind.I have onother radio that i wanted to use with TS 1600V which is Magnum S9, has 50 watts od PEP output,do i have to detune this rtadio in order to use it with TS 1600V, the radio shop i went to says i dont have to ,some says i have to detune it to 1 Watt.I am a liitle bit confused...

You have a few buttons on the front of the amp

One says Finals one says Driver?

If you use a low power radio (25 watts or less) you want to select the Driver.

If you use a high power radio (100 watts or less) you want to select the Finals.

The lower power radio uses the driver section in the amp to deliver full power from the amp while the high power radio will bypass the driver section of the amp and still provide full power using the radio as a driver.

I have the 7 feet RG8 U (not the RG8 X ) cable for the antenna (Wilson 2000).Do you think it is good enough for the TS 1600V and the Galaxy DX959?

And also what is the minimum Alternator ampage should be for my set-up? I have alot of lighting on the truck and the trailer.

you shouild figgure about 10 amps per 100 watts of power from the for just the amp . i wouldnt run any 8 pill final any harder than 1200 watts myself . itll be cleanest that way . so figgure 120 amps minium for just the 1600 , 10 for the radio , 20 more if you use the kicker section . so 150.......plus.......what the truck needs , dont forget lights and ac .

id say youre under amped power wise . but , run the 959 into just the final section and you could get by . check this out .

Texas Star 1600:

AM operation: 4 watts input will produce approximately 175 watts with plenty of
swing. To increase power output, use a modulator and adjust output on the modulator
to no more than 30 watts. 30 watts is maximum input for AM operation. A guideline for
any installation is to increase AM power until it begins to sound distorted, then
decrease it slightly. 30 watts input will produce approximately 850 watts output.
Modulators are made for AM use only- never SSB.

SSB operation: Turn on SSB delay switch. Any radio or amplifier used to drive this unit
should be class AB biased with an output of no more than 150 watts. 12 watts input will
produce approximately 450 watts output. 100 watts input will produce 1600 watts PEP
output as long as 13.8 VDC is maintained during keydown and the antenna is 50
ohms. if 13.8 VDC is maintained but output is low, connect output to 50 ohm dummy
load and test again. All Kenwood, Yaesu and Icom transceivers can run output directly
into this unit.

FM operation: This unit will accept up to 100 watts FM input. Keep transmissions to
less than 30 seconds.


4 watts in avg > 175 watts avg out at 48 amps current draw
10 watts in avg > 450 watts avg out at 72 amps current draw
20 watts in avg > 700 watts avg out at 92 amps current draw
50 watts in avg > 1000 watts avg out at 115 amps current draw
100 watts in avg > 1250 watts avg out at 125 amps current draw

installation: Use #2 electrical cable or two #6 wires in parallel to connect each
positive and negative lead directly to the battery. A second battery next to the unit
will help to keep the voltage up. Use RG-8U or RG-213U coax to connect output to the
antenna. Do not use RG-58U coax.

optional fan kit: plugs into the rear of the unit. the fans will turn on automatically
at 115 degrees fahrenheit and shut off at 110 degrees.

Additional Note: for absolute best performance and longevity, (dependability and reliability)
configure your drive levels and peak-to-carrier for anywhere from 1.5:1 to 4:1 (depending
on how you're measuring power, average or pep) and maintain heatsink temperature below 110
degrees fahrenheit. if you plan on completely ignoring this recommendation then i heartily
suggest that you purchase the fan kit. you'll need it.

the 8 pill final section is essentially that amp , they just added the 350 into the same box to make the 1600V .
since you already have it id run it bare radio with a 200 watt dead key and and swinging about 800 . will be ultra clean and last for ever and ever .
would leave 90 to 100 amps for the truck .
