Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

Yea, what can you do ?
The whole world is full of dis-information .
The whole world is also full of a lot of *** kissers as well .
As for me . . . I believe in myself
And I believe in the almighty Connex radio .
You know what , I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone here from around my area,Long Island New York ??
I'm friggin famous over here . . .
Who has the Cleanest sounding , farthest transmitting radio around here .
That's right . . . He's called " The Rubberman "
No one who is honest can deny it .
Sure there are a few guys runnin around with 2-3 K But . . .

Big watts mean nothing without audio .
I just can't believe how guys get so jealous though?

Everyones got all the answers , but no clue .
Now I have this huge radio I picked up from my grandmother that used to be my grandfathers radio and I'm absolutely clueless on how to even use it, it has so many knobs and buttons, it's going to take me 2 years to figure all this stuff out and a few people have told me I definitely need a ham radio license to use this radio because of the range of the frequencies , But do I still need the license just to posses it ?

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

You do not need the license to possess it. You said that it is an Icom IC-7800, is that correct.
If it is, I am sure you know that it is a $10,000 radio. Most Hams I know would kill for it. I'd kill 2. LOL

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

Ummmm yea??? How did you know what radio it was though ??
I'm not sure what he paid for it , but I know he hardly had enough time to really use it before he passed, it's pretty much brand new .
10 grand for a radio ???

OMG, I didn't see the picture you posted before I answered back !!
Yupp that is the radio , that's the exact one .
I guess you have the same one , geeeezis man , hom many radios do you have man ?

Then again I guess you guys that are real ham radio ops probably have tons and tons of radios .
I know that I have to go for a ham license soon because I don't mind losing the radios I have if they come kicking my door in , but this radio has sentimental value , so I would never want anything to happen like that

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

I combined your 3 posts into one.

I knew because I read it in one of your posts. Your grandpa had taste. What was his call?

I wish I had that radio. I do have a few and I am plenty proud of my shack but I have very limited funds and build or rebuild almost everything I have. I have nothing even close to that radio.

If the FCC were to inspect your station and found it to be illegal you would lose every radio you have license or not.

Rubba,
You obviously have a love for everything radio. Why waste it on an Illegal CB? Why not get your ticket and start having some real fun. I'm talking about talking to the astronauts on the space station, and the space shuttle. Using satellites as repeaters, bouncing you signal off of the moon, etc.

Entry level is Tech, requires no code and the test is extremely easy. The only frequencies on that 7800 that you would be able to use is 50MHz with a Technicians Class ticket but you can upgrade to General easy enough.

Ham radio needs operators who love radio and you obviously do.

One last thing, run some wire around. As long a wire as you can get it. Run it all over, loop it if you need too. Then use that incredible radio to listen.......Listen to every band. LSB below 14MHz and USB above. There wll be a little AM as well and commercial short wave stations on AM. Even some FM. Pull the mike out of it, because you'll smoke it if you try to TX, but listen to all the awesome stuff that is out there. Hook it up to your computer and check out the digital modes.
There is so much more then yelling at your buddies who are 60 miles away.

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

BTW, There are 68 Hams in Long Island, NY (I think that is where you said you lived).

Thousands more through out NYC. Queens has 108. Brooklyn has nearly 1000. 24 in Manhattan.

That is good for you and it could be bad for you...........If you wanted to learn more and maybe become a Ham one of these guys would Elmer you(take you under his wing) and help you.

If you interfere with them they will hunt you down and report you and you will get that visit from the FCC. If you don't interfere they wont even know you are there.

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

Ahhhhh, I didn't know you can do that to the posts . . .
Hmmmm the calll sign. . . .geeeezis , I know it's not a name like mine , He's got a plaque on his desk in the basement with the numbers and letters on it , but it escapes me .
Yea, ever since I found out that these signals are flying through the air and you just need some kind of receiver to pull them in, I have been infatuated with radiosand as far as using the Icom radio, I have been warned and told not to key up on it until I get my ticket .
A friend of mine said he's got some book I can study before I take the test , the only thing that scares me a little bit about it is , I have never really been too good at tests, although, they were aways tests about something I really had no interest in and they were " Forced Tests "
This is something I want and I certainly know I would never want to take a chance on losing this radio for something as stupid as that.
And as far as my CB buddies , I know to you it must sound foolish and probably is, but don't most of us start out this way?
And Oh my God, would I love to talk To the astronauts, but do they really have the time to talk to someone like me , I mean afterall, what the hell could I even talk to them about ?
And here I am sitting here thinking how cool it would be to talk to another country and you're talking out of this world ??
Incredible KC!
I'll tell you what , I'm really excited now and I can't wait to get the ball rolling .

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

You see that's just the thing I can't stand . . .
What do you mean Hunt me down?
Like anyone has the right to come invading my personal space?
If anyone comes hunting me down, they better know what to do when they get here .
I would never bother anyone who hasn't first bothered me .
If a man wants to do something with his time and he's not bothering anyone , why not leave him alone , why do people want to hunt others down, just because they have the technology to do so ?
In my whole existance I have made so few enemies and I seem to get along with everyone I have ever been in contact with , sometimes the way I word things come out in a way I didn't mean to come out , or is mistaken for what I really mean and I am the most mellow person I know until I feel I'm being threattened, then I become a completely different person , someone that not too many have seen or wish to see.
I do know my bounderies though , I wouldn't even talk on this radio until I have all the right to do so .
As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to put my radios to rest and study for this test and find out as much as I can about how to use this radio the right way , before I blow it up , when I tell you I am absolutely clueless about all these knobs and buttons , I mean it , I might as well be learning a whole new language or something , it's like no other radio I have ever seen , My friend has an Icom radio, but it looks nothing like this one, it's like half it's size with half the buttons

Re: Connex 3300HP-ZX

I know you heard me say that I can throw a wire up in a tree and talk around the world on 5Watts. I'm not lying about that. It is very easy to do when you know how.
Astronauts don't want to talk to you? They would and do.

I know your gramps has some old ham buddies who would love to help you get your ticket.

If not, I can help you find a local club to get you started, and can tell you how to get the name and address of every ham in your town.

BTW, I started out with an old Short Wave radio in the basement of my Home in NE PA when I was a kid, next was CB and I kinda stagnated there for many years. I was always an electronics experimenter and hobbiest. Owned a CB Shop and a Computer Store
Nov. 25 will mark the beginning of my 4th year as a Ham. I tookthe test on 11/20/2003 and received my call on the 25th.
