Where do you set your 'mic gain' dial?

Oops, not the 636, that was my old mike. This is an Astatic powered mike with the circular chrome grille in front in a black plastic case...the numbers are long gone, it just keeps on ticking!
My bad. It looks like the Black D-104 M6B except it has a long trigger like the red devil. I believe it was some form of the M6B. Dang good sound to it.

Yeah I wondered about that. My PC68XL is pretty hot and feeds back, but only a little; you almost have to face the mike to the speaker, so the statement has merit. But if I used a crystal mike or had the gain up on the mike, I think it would squeal like a stuck pig.

 

Been wondering about this myself....if I should keep it at 3 o clock or what.

 

Don't know how Tater does it, but I open up the mike until I get overmodulation with no reverb or echo on...turn it back to the "big radio" sound and back off a little more. THEN turn on the connex board and set it to sound like you're just in a big room. I get more compliments from that than anything, and nobody says, "Uh, wahd ee saaay?"
Checking this on the modulation meter (DE 2000, not one on the radio) and it reads around 100%, nominal, with some peaks at maybe 110.
I think guys running over 150% sound like idiots. And that's when I can understand them. I also think that if your radio is tuned wrong, you can compensate with the mike gain dial. Mine is the connex control and was bypassed with the gain wide open, so I control it with the gain on the mike. So get someone to hook up a good meter and adjust it to talk at 100% - talking, not whistling or yelling. Talking is what it's for, right?

 

Yep...Depends on the radio, but even more, it depends on the Mic.

On my Galaxy 93t, If I'm using a Astatic 636 I have the Mic Gain at about half way...Sky Thumper 65DX, I have it less than half way...And with the New Ranger SRA 198 Noise Cancelling Mic, I have to turn the Mic Gain almost all the way off!

Just depends like said...on the Mic, radio, and your voice...

 

Somewhere I'd read that often women are used as announcers in radio because their voice penetrates more than the bassy men's tones.

I just knew that was information that you all simply had to know...

I set my meter to modulation and run the mic gain up to where my loudest syllables put me just a little into the red. When you go in the red you are exceeding 100% modulation and will begin to sound fuzzy or garbled.

I'm sure you don't want to sound like you are fuzzy.

Should someone comment that you are to loud they can turn down their RF Gain or you can turn down your RF Power or as a last resort you can turn down your mic gain.

If I use a power mic I put the mic gain at 50% and adjust the power on the microphone to get me to 100% modulation.
This will get your signal heard farther, not necessarily make it go farther. Have you noticed when somebody is far away you have to turn up your RF Gain and/or Volume to hear them.

Use a noise cancelling mic to eliminate background noise not your mic gain.

Depends on the radio as to how well the mod part of the meter will be marked.
