I think he was implying about a Cobra 200 which is a cheap mobile radio....and not a Cobra 2000 which is the Cadillac of Cobra base stations.

Even the folks at Cobra acknowledged there were alot of problems with the Cobra 200 GTL right off the bat. Cobra warranty service centers were swamped with returned radios.

Did you get a decent price for it? I have one sitting in my garage, I was thinking of putting it on there too.

It was brand new in the box, I got $225 for it. Minus fees and shipping, I'm walking away with just over $200.

Strange that Cobra no longer offers this radio (or any other 10 meter radio) for sale.

In my opinion the Cobra 2000GTL and the President Madison were the best base radios of their time.
I'm sure there are some great radio's out there now but My President Grant and Cobra 148GTL still work like new after 25 years. The 148 is basically the same as the 2000 without a few bell and whistles and a mobile.

No doubt the 2000 GTL has alot of nice features, unless you have had one you really don't appreciate them totally. With few mods these can be decent on AM, not a powerhouse as of some of the bases I have had but when set up right can hold there own.

Cobra 200

I've had 3 of these little gems.

These radios are meant to be a 10 meter radio.. But..... They make one heck of a CB as well. There are some drawbacks though.

The older ones failed a lot. SERIOUSLY!

The newer ones (like I have) are a dream. they have talkback!! There are 4 banks of 80 channels. (get familiar with the frequency counter.. Trust me... It's easier that way) Once peaked out, I have seen over 100w from them.

The echo is a single control. No timing... Only echo level (bye bye reverb)

Get you an Astatic or Turner noise cancelling mic. (you'll thank me later)

I get great range even on low power. usually 10 miles or more in the valleys. Even made it into Florida one day before a storm.

Now comes the liability waiver/warning that you knew was coming since I am a licensed amateur.. Stay off 10 meters unless you gotz the slip of paper that lets you. Otherwise... Enjoy the 200.. I know you will. I do mine.
