Cobra made 4 different versions of these radios. As they went along Cobra made updates to them in order to improve them so that people would not only buy them but so that Cobra would not be swamped with repairs. The first 3 versions were all junk for one reason or the other with the last one being OK. A electronics shop in Elkin NC sold the last of the Cobra 200's for $125.00 a ( brand new ) a few months ago just to get rid of them.No one wanted them!

These radios are so bad that Cobra no longer repairs these if you send one in,they just refund your money and throw the radio in the trash! If i remember correctly 3 in 10 has to be returned to the factory for one reason or the other. On the other hand, alot of problems with these radio were because 95% of the CB shops were to STUPID to understand what to do and not to do to these radios!

One of the locals got one for........$50.00 that was less than 1 month old. I went into it and re tuned it (it had been hacked up pretty bad) and it sounded really really good not only on AM but SSB as well. Did around 100 watts on AM and a little more on SSb. As far as i know it's still working after 2 years. It's a shame to. If cobra would have done a better job in building the radio the first time around, they would have had a Galaxy beater. But ended up with the worst radio ever!

Oh,and a Cobra 2000 GTL is 10 times the radio that a President Madison ever was! I have had them both ( have 3 2000's now ) and the Uniden is nothing compared it. Better receive, better audio and better SSB performance than the Uniden.

All well and good so long as you stay OUT of 24 and 28 MHZ (*10 and 12 Meters). Those so-called "ham nazis" will be MORE than glad to assist you in receiving a warning from FCC to your company, the result of which could range from a session with a supervisor requiring you to explain why you were yapping on illegal frequencies on an illegal radio, requiring you to REMOVE the radio from the truck, being dismissed from the company, OR (even better from the hams' point of view), a $10,000 FINE from the Feds!
All that's up to you, but the Feds WILL listen to the hams who report illegal operators on their assigned frequencies.

Hams may be "nazis" to you, but they are only protecting what belongs to THEM, not you! They, after all, did what was asked of them for the privileges of operating those bands. Unlicensed operators are not welcomed and will actively be sought out to turn in! This is the only way they have to see than THEIR bands don't turn into the lowball free-for-all that CB radio is. All THEY ask is that you KNOW where you are transmitting, STAY OUT of their bands, and don't come knocking because you think you have "them extra channels" just a-waiting for you! It really isn't too much to ask.

People often ask why CB radio doesn't get additional frequencies, more power, more of this and that. Well, one should be able to deduce that it is the behavior of so many CBers, the outlaw attitude so many of think is just sooooooo 'cool' that makes the Feds say, "NO WAY!" (among other things)

maybe you can answer my question Gadfly, so how do you talk on the 200 gtl to someone w/ a standard cb when they r on 19, just stay on the am freq. and put it on 19 on the 200 gtl? i'm a little confused when they say it's fine to use them but just stay out of the ham freqs. so does that mean it's just like a normal cb but w/ more power?

The truth is with the number of truckers in this country, around 3 million+. The number of drivers that get a letter from the FCC for violations is way less than the number of letters that licensed hams get from the FCC for violations!

Your statements are misleading and are a strawman argument. There around 600,000+ hams in the USA alone. Out of that number, maybe 3 to 6 hams will get a notice of violation per month. Part of those are not deliberate rules violations but those of a technical nature. CB radio is not documented like amateur stations are. IF the number of ACTUAL violations by CB stations were enforced the SAME way the hams are, the numbers of fines would PALE in comparison. Recently, the numbers of CB violations HAS begun to climb due to the complaints from consumers. From the hams' side of the fence, we WELCOME the enforcement from FCC!

Here is the truth about the hyped up ham nazi's as i have seen them called on this thread.......
Ham operators are necessary in any country in all of the world it will be the last form of communication available in war time if ww3 ever did break out....
Having said that most ham operators have their higher than mighty ..... This is my frequency blah , blah , blah....... Ok dude settle down so you took the 30 minute test on line and paid your 45 dollars ......
Now sit down and stfu.........
Most ham operators or so called ham operators now days cant even do simple morse code!!!!!
And yes the napolian complex is abundant whith most .... Furious because they lack something in their lives....... Which means to me that they have really small......... Attention spans!!!!!!! Hahahaha
btw i am an ham op. And i love my cb!
Take the course on line pay your dues and piss off an nazi.........
And there is not one thing they can do about it.... Except turn in your call sign..... Oh my get a warning..... Whatever!!!!
