The Cobra 29 LTD is a pretty good model. It's also easily modified to increase range. They have a new one now called the 29 LTD BT which adds Bluetooth capability. This in turn means a six pin mic cable instead of the standard four pin.

The way the Bluetooth works is you hear the other party through the CB speaker. You talk through the CB mic, but do not have to push any buttons to be heard. Basically, you hang the mic near your head and you've got a good handsfree setup. The setup also features electronic noise cancelling so a noisy cab won't be a problem. The other party should only hear your voice. CB radio use is blocked during a phone call.

Most reviews I've seen have spoken positively of the unit. The guts are all the same as the tried and trusted 29 LTD. Same mods can be done and it's a quality made product.

Pretty much any Uniden PC 66, PC 68, PC 76 or PC 78 series would be a good radio.

If you like Cobra, the Cobra 25 and 29's as mentioned are good radios.

If you want a SSB to talk long distances in addition to regular CB, the Cobra 148 GTL or the Uniden Grants are excellent radios.

If at all possible, look for the older Cobras built in the Phillipenes or the Unidens built either in Phillipenes or Taiwan. They were better constructed than the ones you buy now from China. The only downfall is they were all side mics back then unlike now they're all front mics.

Also if you're getting a newer Cobra try to avoid the nighwatch ones....they're nice because the face is lit up at night but once the light goes the face no longer lights up and is costly to repair. The Uniden OTOH has an Elite series that also has a light up face but uses more than 1 LED to light it up unlike the Cobras which use only one.

I have had a 148 and a Grant for over 25 years and they still work like new. I keep the golden screwdriver out of it.

If you have some reason for a SSB radio and about 30 watt peak after tune and alignment from a good tech, the 959's aren't that terrible if you adjust the AMC and remove nothing from inside the radio.

I would agree, but the same numbers or better can be gotten from a cobra 29 but you would not have ssb as with the galaxy. I just don't much care for those 3 digit galaxy's personally but thats just my opinion. Lots of people like them i just prefer the cobra as i have no use for ssb. If a guy wants ssb the 959 would do fine with above mods that you stated.
