I see this on the ham bands .... a guy goes out and buys a big ### amp YET can't use the cheap radio he is running ......

Now SKILLED radio guys run just a few watts and work the world ....
I have run QRP even on 20 meters and it's just not that hard to do well
with under 5 watts .....

Anyone can run 10,000 watts with no skill and be the big radio

Back in my CB days IŽve been having contacts with CBers in England, Italy and Slovenia standing with my old Suzuki jeep on top of a hill in western Germany, using a cheap, barefoot FM CB radio with 4 watts and a (welltuned) vertical on top of the metal roof of my car.
If you have the right conditions youŽll get skip. For 27MHz this usually happens during periods with strong solar activity in summer. If you donŽt have these conditions you can transmit with 1000 watts and have no skip.

BTW, I have three WW2 British Army No. 19 Wireless sets in restoration as were installed in British tanks during this war. They work from 2 to 8 MHz and only produce 4-5 watts power (AM and CW).
I know some Canadians, British and Norwegians, who regularly have talks across the Atlantic using those vintage radios.

For myself, with a pretty mediocre selfbuilt antenna ( due to restrictions imposed by my landlord) and 100W IŽm covering all of Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East, and occasionally I have a contact in the US.

I just wouldn't have the patience it takes to try and shoot skip on a stock cb. Or the time to waste.

It is not a waste of time when the band is open you just don't need much power ..... I had a HW-7 radio back years ago it ran ONE watt morse code and I worked all over the country with it ....

On 29 mhz FM worked into Germany from the car with 4 watts ....

It can be done and many do its called QRP .....

I always thot some truckers used "boots" because all the "bull stuff" they usually spread was getting a little deep in they's cab.
