I keep mine on squelched way down. I do have a Motor home and get truckers dx me all the time because I have channel 19 and my handle (Hunter because I am one). I usually have some good conversations about hunting because there are allot of truckers that have been hunters since they were kids.
If i hear a music carrier, a crummy singer or a stupid argument I will turn it off.
I get truckers and 4 wheelers that want to talk but if were going to get long winded i have us go to another channel to leave 19 open for traffic warnings or let the truckers rock.
If ya want to talk do what I did and buy good stick on numbers and letters with you monitoring channel and handle and you'll be surprised how many people call ya up.
I've had times I would put masking tape over my handle so I can listen to my SiriusXM favorite shows.
I will sometimes just say I'm back out because I'm listening to my Sirius. I have been a sportsman and a sports nut having played several sports and keep up on all my old hobbies and have a ton of stories.
Allot of guys don't have a darn thing to say except total BS.
If ya want to talk allot post your handle so it can be well seen and keep your radio on. Squelch it way down with the volume up.
Have a good well tuned radio with a talk back speaker so you can hear how you sound.
Echo's and noise makers blow and I don't care what you think.
If I'm talking to someone with a creepy radio I ask them to turn it off or I'm done. Your not Wolfman Jack, nuff said
For the truckers don't be a prude, you have allot of miles to drive and there are allot of us non-truckers that have allot to say and can kill allot of time and good conversation.
Don't blow us off just because were not truckers and don't know you're lingo.
Remember when you got your first radio and didn't know the difference between the squelch and the volume.

I listen to short range also, and I keep it just low enough to hear it. It is amazing how you can pick up on it when you need to. The tone of someones voice telling you to brake is different than someone just talking on it to talk.

Park ranger must be talking about Cowboy out there, i hate that sob, he is annoying as all ell. and all the cb a-hole dot com ####, and the people who do the 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1- a million times, id say thats prob the only place my radio is usually off 90% of the time, unless im way up-state ny, or in nh far enough away from that ####,
but your right on the tones people have when they want to grab your atten. or when its just you for as far as u can see, and only one other truck heading the oppisite way, u hear him/her u pay attention,
also, you do learn key words to pick up on when the volume is down low,
your carrier name, eb wb nb sb, break check, bear, wreck, left/right lane. coop
and my fav -- hey xxxx xxxxx check the driver coming up on the left

You don't know how you sound? Unless you have a talk back speaker? I don't need a talk back speaker to know how I sound.

But, I agree with you on the big, powerful radios. Too much echo, and the weird noise makers, I'm not responding to you.

I usualy have my cb squelched for short receiving.
When I meet someone I keep the radio down (traffic on).
But when I have to reverse or if it's really busy I go on the background with volume off. Don't like to be distracted.
But if I compare the use of the cb for info, seedtraps, accidents and stuff now and for 8 years.
It surprises me that less info is given to other drivers.

I do have talk back and a Dosy so I don't have to get a radio check when i don't get a come back. Cobra has a nice lil talk back speaker that is inexpensive and work very good.
