BREAKER BREAKER 19 - Help talking on CB - etiquette

I bought a Cobra model 29 the other day at the Flying J in ohio on 280 (on vacation with my wife at cedar point!) I got it all setup and I'm just wanting to make sure i'm not being rude.


Here are the ways I've started covo's with people


"Breaker Breaker 19 anyone out there? come back"

Also tried Radio Check channel 19 come back. and got a response.

Please help me with radio etiquette

There is your problem... your on 19 and trying not to be rude.... nobody knows how to relate to that....

haha! yeah I had 1 guy tell me "why would you want to be a trucker NO money in it!" LOL then another guy said come on guys NO fights!

So on a serious note whats the proper way to start and end? I feel like im making it up as I go along...

Most drivers (truckers) will not say break. They will say how bout it southbound? Still common practice for someone outside of trucking to break. A lot of businesses around truck stops will.. Best thing to do is just monitor the radio and listen on how most communicate. If you see a bear you might say full grown rolling east bound at the 17. Most will reply; you look good back to such and such where I got on at.

Not a lot of conversing anymore between drivers and 4 wheelers. The CB era is pretty much dead for 4 wheelers.

I enjoy using mine. I drive a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck and am running a Galaxy 44 with a Palomar 225. It came in handy yesterday. I was driving down 65 North and traffic was stopped for 4 miles. So, I asked if there were any cut throughs in the median between where i was and the next exit. somebody came on and told me so i was able to turn around. i was needing to go back in that direction yesterday anyway. haha

I talked skip today, never done that before. I talked to some guy in Ohio and somebody in Georgia. I didn't think my radio could do that.

Any CB radio can talk skip.

The SSB ones are more commonly used for skip though...since the skip shooters usually migrate to 38 LSB.

I've personally talked to Florida from Missouri on a Uniden 68.

To the OP, here's a way to get someone to respond to you.

Just key up at your favorite truck stop and say "Hey, can anyone give this pretty little blonde/brunnette/redhead a ride to (name a big city like Houston, etc)"

Someone's guaranteed to key up and say "I'll take her there..."

Then you can come back with "thanks for the break driver".

Just key up and say something like this, hey stupid what are you doing in the left lane running 60 mph when the speed limit's (fill in speed limit). Someone will respond .

JK seriously though just listen to how others start a conversation and end one. If you want to get a specific person just say hey Northbound/southbound or whatever direction your trveling ( conway,JB, swift) or whatever the name on the truck says you got it on? don't be suprised if you don't get an answer though it amazes me how many drivers don't turn their radios on anymore. You can always tell the ones that don't when you get to a traffic backup cause the ones of us that do will have gotten off to go around the big backups and those guys turn their radios on and start asking whats the holdup? Why is it backed up for?

That's just not true. If you have a decent radio and know the lingo when you just talk nobody knows.
I've had a base at home and a CB in my pickem up truck with a camper or 5ver since 82.
If I give info or ask for some the response is, "thanks driver".

There's plenty of talk around here in central Alabama. I can go on 19 and talk to truckers all the time. There are plenty of base stations that i talk to in my mobile anywhere from 30 miles or more north or south of my little town. (You just have to have you a little bump on your radio to communicate good with the far away ones...) and there are ALOT of folks who have mobiles in their four wheelers just like i do.

First off loose the "Breaker"
You want on channel just ask "Break Channel"

Break Channel/Radio Check (check transmit)
Break Channel/Audio Check (sound check)
Break Channel/Local 411 (directions etc)

You can "try" to be civil but its seldom recognized,I generally ask twice on barefoot before asking a third time with the 2X8 engaged and set on stun.
After a few seconds of dead key I can usually get the channel break I was looking for.
