    Got a question,

Every now and then, usually on a Saturday or a Sunday, I will hear this CB shop come on the air. Sometimes it's a man and then sometimes, it's a woman. I think that it may be somewhere in Florida. I can hear them in central Alabama...

They came on tonight about 6:00 saying something like "attention drivers, bob's cb shop hours are...." then it said something about the next rest area for drivers is exit 70?

They may not have said "bob's" but I think they did. I was just wondering if anybody had any clue who this could be or if they have heard this as well.:biggrin_25520:

Well, I just typed in "Bob's CB shop" and came up with this:

    Please use google

It also says something about exit 70 on the website, so this may have been them. They are in Pennsylvania though. Anybody know anything about these guys?

Were in a cycle with the sun that is really making "skip" travel right now. It's a cycle we get in every 10 or so years. At least that's what a radio guy told me a couple weeks ago. You go to other channels (for me it seems especially bad in the 20's) you hear the skip pretty loud.

What I was thinking too....skip has been pretty strong lately. Turn to channel 6 or 11 and if you hear a lot of black folks chattering posting out their call numbers and such, then you know skip is rolling. Now I'm going to go buy me a new SSB radio and talk across the earth.

Bob's is in North Central PA area. Good shop. I've done business with them and no a couple guys that live in that area that really like them. I had good experiences with them both times. Good shop in my book. They don't do shotty truckstop cb shop work either like the ones just out for your $. I had a problem with an antenna I bought from them ( factory defect ) called them up and they sent we a new one and paid for return shipping on the defective one.

No but I've been hearing different places from all over the country lately with the skip being as heavy as it has been. I'm still trying to figure out where that #### woman is advertising JW's truck wash I have heard her everyday for the last 3 weeks I think all over the midwest! :biggrin_2554:

They may not have said Bob's, but I think that they did. Plus, I know for a fact that I have heard a CB shop from somewhere in Florida on a random Saturday afternoon while I was driving through town. They were advertising radios and stuff like that and they said something about the turnpike in Florida and I know exactly where they are talking about.

That's why I thought that the cb shop I heard yesterday was in Florida but the only "bob's cb shop" anwhere close to an exit 70 that I can find is the one in PA.

They must have a hell of a setup if they are getting out like that.

Setup has some effect but it's jmostly ust the propagation in the atmosphere. That's what causes "skip". Base stations or non moving mobile stations do the best because the constant positioning of the antenna. In the right conditions you can talk several hundred miles on a barefoot radio swinging 15-20 watts although the more power your running the louder you will be heard on the other end. The atmospheric conditions cause the signal to "bounce off" or "skip" off the atmosphere and who knows where the will "land". You may not here someone 5 miles away but may be able to talk to someone 500 miles away. Skip is alot heavier on ssb and easier to talk long distances on ssb but that is also the case in normal conditions as well but even on AM it has been really heavy lately. We are coming into a major sunspot cycle which is what causes the "conditions". It happens every few years but this is one of the major cycles we are coming into. You'll notice that it is much "heavier conditions" later in the day when the temps are higher especially. When it hits "full cycle" you'll hardly be able to talk to people close to you but will have no problem talking hundreds or even thousands of miles depending on your setup.
