I've had my cobra 148 for 25 years. I had funnies installed, tuned and a variable installed. I've had it in many vehicles but mostly my 82 Silverado with a big camper on it.
I use a silver streak 150watt kicker that also still works like a million bucks.
I've used many antenna's with it. K40, Francis Amazer, no ground plane Firestik and a steel whip depending on the vehicle.
I have no Idea of the quality of the new 148s but mine spent most the time in the H.D. truck and the cover has never been off my 148 or the Silver Streak.
I am now using the148 for a base and I still get nothing but compliments even when I run barefoot at 2watts for my 200watt Footwarmer.
I have also had a Grant import with so many channels that I still don't know what they're all for in the motor home. I don't know about all the other channels so *Gadfly* can suck it.
It's a darn good radio and I don't care what he thinks.
When I use it and talk to the drivers they respond back to me as driver so It must sound good.
I use good coax and check my settings about twice a year with my Dosy.
If you can find a virgin 148 from the 80s you will have a good find.
I am in no way dissing any other radios because what i have has worked to good for to many years.
I do have another message for Gadfly, Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

Google linear amplifier. Most will be listed as 10 meter amplifier's since it is illegal to operate them on 11 meter band. ( Sorry just thought I'd save Gadfly the time to respond ).

Fatboy, X-force, Texas Star, Lipzipper, Palomar, Worldwide, these are just a few of the brand names their literally are tons.

As far as the antenna yes a wilson 5000 would be the same bought at either place however their are several models available in mag mount, or trucker style and also short or long shafts.
