Needing to understand galaxy 949

Hey all..

I just purchased a new 949 and I need help. Where do my knobs need to be set? Talkback, clarifier, mic gain, rf output, a switch that says tone then has a low,med and high setting, why does it beep after I talk?

The cb shop peaked and tuned it by a swr meter, no removing or tuning insides.. So I know its set up right.. All I need now is a rk56 and figure out how to work it.

Keep the talk back off unless you like hearing yourself thru the speaker and possibly inducing interference which will make other users tell you to "turn off that dang squealing radio!".

The clarifier is only used when you are operating in sideband mode. It's used to tune in the other party. The other party has to also be on sideband and on the same sideband as you...meaning if you're on lower sideband (LSB) they also have to be. Once you're both on the same mode, when you hear them they'll sound like Donald Duck sort of....you turn the clarifier until their voice sounds normal.

Mic gain....depends on the mic used and your voice. Start out at 3 o clock and ask for a radio check...if they say you're muffled, or overmodulated or "sounds like you're eating the mic", turn the mic gain back maybe a 1/4 turn. You want to turn it just enough that you don't sound garbled over the radio.

RF output...if running barefoot (no linear amp) keep it fully cw. It's only to be turned back if you plan on running a linear amp.

The "tone" switch just sets the internal speaker to sound to your likings. Pick whether you want it to sound hi, med or low range sounds to come from it.

It beeps after you talk because you have the roger beep on. Look for a switch that says "RB"....then turn it off. Or leave it on if you like to tick everyone off.

P.S. I don't believe you "peak and tune" a radio with an SWR meter but with an O scope. An SWR meter is used to adjust the SWR's on the antenna on the truck, so that you can get good range without destroying the radio. Yes high SWR's (anything above 3) will destroy the finals in the radio.

I have never used a "O" scope to peak a radio ....

To do it right you need a IFR-1200s class generator...

In my personal shop I have a very old ( +60 years ) modulation scope that is due for a cap change and a good watt meter ( BIRD #43 ) and a Lamkin shop generator as well as 2 good frequency counters and a spectrum scope .....

But this is for my use ......

ONE IFR-1200S replaces that all ....

Bottom line is 99.999% of radios come from the factory legaly aligned .....
If you need more buy a amp ....

Wow,

Thanks a bunch turbo-t. That helps me out greatly. Your right.. He used a machine that looked like something a doctor would use.. Then he used a yellow machine that produced tone.. All kinds of machines. Sorry for my mistake.

Ok so I stand corrected, I've never peaked and tuned a radio but have heard somewhere an Oscope is used in setting up a radio, not sure where or how.

As far as the "99.999% of radios come from the factory legally aligned"....I guess it depends who you talk to but I know of a few that will swear up and down a tune and alignment will make a difference in the radio.

I personally have a bone stock Cobra 21 GTL that I considered buying an amp and letting it eat, but then again I've wondered if I should ship it out to Sparky to have the best brought out of it. It is a 30 year old radio though.
