Yep NO STANDARDS

 

Exact reason why I always carry a phone with wireless web when shopping at places like flea markets and CB shops. When someone gives you a "line" about how good or cheap something is that they're selling... just whip out the old phone and Poof!... you have the real facts.

That thing has saved my *** countless times and they're quite reasonable anymore. Even some prepaid carriers offer unlimited wireless web for around 10 bucks per month.

 

The same can be said about "White Lists" as well.There are several shops that have a big fan base that I would never consider buying a radio from unless it was in stock form.

 

If you know and understand just a little bit about electronics you can usually tell who is blowing sand up your wazoo and who knows what they are talking about. West Memphis is not a place to get your CB worked on. There used to be one guy there, his name is Ray, who did good work, but I think he is retired now. You can ignore my opinion on this if you want, but I've seen the proof, numerous times.

 

AGAIN NO STANDARDS NO AGENCY TO GO BACK ON .......

If you get a car fixed many shops have trained repairman who is your CB
shop trained by ?????? What standards to they use ?????

And who pays the price for a recked radio ......

 

This topic is old but what is the standard for a CB radio repairman?

It used to be that a CB repair tech had to have an FCC radiotelephone operators license. Is it required any more? There was a written test for that and some trade schools used to offer a course for it but it can be learned & earned by study and practice. I've had a general radiotelephone license since 1986 and finally decided to get the Radar endorsement this spring.

If the tech of today has such an FCC 'phone license or is equally competent sans paper, a small CB shop may not be able to pay him enough to keep him full time and he probably won't want to do lower-paying installation work, just repairs and maybe SWR or technical issues the installer can't deal with.

It's hard to identify good technicians in the CB industry unless by word of mouth or unless they can show a FCC license of some kind. Most who actually do work as communications techs would rather work with the 2-way FM stuff or other higher-tech gear because the pay is better.

Good luck on holding a CB shop liable for a wrecked radio if they did a modification job on your request. Talk to the tech first and find out what they are going to do exactly, even if you don't understand it all you may find out whether the tech understands it himself.

My radio shop guy holds the highest class Ham license, has been repairing CBs for 40 years or so, guarantees all his work, and most of all is honest. If fact you can google his name or call sign and read plenty about him. For years he ran the web site CB Tricks. He is old and cantankerous but your radio will love him. He won't do the "internet mods" that butcher up a radio, but he can tune one to work great and last a long time. And, he'll stand behind his work. He is in a kind of out of the way place now, but he does have some customers that ship their radios to him.

I have no reason to doubt you however it IS a fact that if the FCC catches you modding radios you can lose your ham license. NOW if he is REPAIRING them that is not a problem there is NO REQUIREMENT for a license to repair radios .....

This is the reason most of us who work on part 90 radios will not get involved in fixing CB stuff ....... beside the price of CB sets new .....
