For whatever it's worth, I just read a very positive online review of the 979, and it even said the 979 drifts a lot for SSB. Kind of makes me wonder why they bother making the thing, except that they can advertise it as having 120 channels.

And really it's not even 120 channels either. SSB is just a different mode of the radio.

I've got a new galaxy 979 that i like a lot but i don't ever talk to anybody on SSB. I don't really know anything about it and I don't know anybody else that ever uses it.

When skip is heavy you'll hear lots of traffic on ssb.

AM is your primary mode of communication while on the road. SSB comes in more with the hobby side of CB radio. You will here most, if not all SSB conversations on channels 37-40. SSB is much more conversational than say channel 19. It's fun, try it sometime, just remember to keep your echo off!

I recommend a good Cobra CB to be honest. They have one now that is actually blue-tooth capable which is awesome. If your cell phone has blue-tooth capability, you can actually use the cellphone through the CB radio. Answer calls, dial calls... you get the general idea.

As far as reliability goes, Cobra is one of the 'top dogs' in the game. They're reliable and durable. I strongly recommend you pony up a little extra money and purchase a Cobra 29WXNWBT. In my opinion, it's the best CB on the market at the moment.

Quick Edit: Alternatively, the Uniden PC78ELITE is also a pretty good CB radio. Although considering the almost equal price regardless, I still recommend the Cobra listed above. Just my two cents.

Since I know absolutely nothing about SSB except that I have a switch for it on my radio... What do you do? just basically click it on upper or lower side band and you will most likely hear skip rolling in?

is it because they also have their radios set on the same channel on the upper or lower side band like you do? is it easier to talk skip and get out even further on SSB? Do a lot of people use it?

Also, I don't even have echo, but why would you make sure that the echo is turned off when using SSB?

Because echo on SSB sounds absolutely AWFUL!!!! Sometimes not even readable. SSB has more "punch" because most ALL of the effort is put in the audio portion of the signal and eliminates the wasteful carrier. It makes the PEP (Peak Envelope Power) 12 watts instead of the 4. No need to get TOO involved in that.

Most CB sideband is done on LOWER sideband (don't know why; it just IS). If you are on UPPER SSB and everybody else is on LOWER, then you'll wonder why you ain't hearing anybody. (maybe a bit of a grumbling or "donald duck" sound). Incidentally, BOTH sidebands are PART of the same "channel", so it doesn't mean you've got MORE than the 40 channels; sideband is a MODE of modulating the signal, not a "channel". That's how some CB shops rook people; they tell them they've got 120 "channels", or "340 channels", etc. 'Tain't so! You're still on the SAME channel; just a different mode. Hope that makes the mud muddier!!!!

Yeah, I probably should have made that more clear, I meant it as a joke!
