Celadon: What kind of runs would I be making?

Check with Schneider bulk/tanker about their runs. I think that division hires out of VA & tanker is where the money is.

 

Over the road, they ask you to stay out for two weeks minimum between time off requests - three weeks if you want to make any money. You could run anywhere in the lower 48 + Canada; they'll have you apply for a passport if you don't have one (at company expense). Most Canadian runs will take you south of Toronto. Once in a while we'll have runs close to Montreal, Winnipeg, etc. but they're somewhat rare. Shouldn't be too hard to get you home to that part of Virginia. Any questions, let me know. 1. You may want to contact recruiting about training/requirements - I don't want to tell you incorrectly. I don't think any more training would typically be required, as long as you have your CDL, but they may require some experience first. I'm not sure how much they're hiring out of CDL schools with no prior experience (the obvious exception being Celadon's new school...)

2. Earned Days Off policy is one day off for every seven days out - you could take one day off every other weekend and then slowly build up some extra off days on top of that. 12 days out/2 days off on a continuing basis will take you into negative EDO fairly quickly. 13 days out/1 day off is more sustainable. Going home that often may not get you the miles you need to generate a good paycheck - but only you know what kind of pay you need. How do you feel about running Canadian freight? The drivers on the Canadian Regional fleet get home every weekend if they want to. They can also get some extra time off and extra pay for Canadian runs. If you want more details you can contact Indy dispatch and ask for the Canadian Regional dispatcher working that day. They would know more than me.

3. Richmond terminal is probably the closest. We also have terminals in Carlisle, PA and Greensboro, NC.

4. Yes, it's possible... not really easy. It would probably go into the system as a lower priority routing, but it can be done. It's something you would want to talk about with your dispatcher, should you end up working with Celadon.

5. No; none of Celadon's U.S. drivers run in Mexico.

There are VA to Montreal runs.

 

The only downside to delivering in Montreal, or Quebec for that matter, is that all the signs are in French. In all the other provinces, the signs are bilingual with French and English but Quebec has to be different (there's a long story about that) and only have their signs in French. You'll quickly learn the basic words: north, south, east, west. Oh and stop...stop is a good one to know. Of course the dreaded phrase I never want to see is "sortie barre" which means 'exit blocked' which means you'll have to follow a detour. I had to follow one through downtown Montreal when my exit for a highway was closed for construction.
