So I just read some stuff on a website called sandctrucking.com and it said that Celdon offers a refresher course and will take pretty much anyone as long as their 22 years old and have a cdl. It also says you don't pay for the refresher until after you complete it so I'm assuming they take it out of your check each week? I just turned 22 about two weeks ago and I got my cdl in June of last year but I've never used it. I haven't had a real job January of which I was laid off from ( downsizing ), I've had some small under the table type jobs here and there but nothing worth putting on an application since then. Would I be eligible for a refresher course at Celedon? I never thought they offered one before. Also I live in Maryland if that factors in.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Celedon does have a refresher course! Im not sure of the specifics but there is a number you can call to get a better update then what I can give you (855) 209-5524. Also Averitt Express and Prime both have refresher courses also.

    daedric269 Thanks this.

Ok thanks, I'll call em first thing in the morning. Was hoping someone on here had some specifics about it. I'm looking for a refresher to take that I don't have to pay up front for because I just simply cannot afford that at the moment, Knight Transportation offered me one but you have to pay I think it was $500 up front first. Regarding Prime, I remember seeing somewhere that if you've been unemployed for 6 months or longer, Prime won't take you for some reason. I think I saw that a few times on the Prime forum here.

Averitt might be the way to go, they pay you to take their refresher course. Buddy of mine did it, and get got paid 600 a week for 3 weeks and then released to his own solo run.

For everybody suggesting Averitt, I wouldn't be eligible for them according to their website.

Taken straight from their site: Averitt continues to grow with immediate openings in our Student Driver Training Program. To qualify for this training program you must meet one of these requirements:
    • Graduated from one of our approved truck driving schools in the previous 120 days OR
    • Have 1 up to 4 months of solo Tractor Trailer experience within the past 1 year OR
    • Have 18+ months of solo Tractor Trailer experience in the past 10 years

Obviously I am way past the 120 day cutoff from recently graduating my school.

Their " Refresher training program " says it's only available for people with 1 year exp in the last 4 years. Quoting from their site... "
    [h=1]Refresher Training Program[/h] (Regional & Dedicated/Supply Chain Drivers Only)
Been out of the driver’s seat for a while? Only have 1 year of verifiable tractor-trailer experience and it was 4-5 years ago? This program will provide you a minimum of 1 week of paid training at $600 per week for Regional drivers and $500-$600 for Dedicated/Supply Chain drivers. After successfully completing the course, Regional drivers will earn starting pay of 40-46 cpm depending on location.

So according to their website, I'm 100% ineligible with Averitt.

I actually know a few people who drive for Averitt. According to the specifics, that you posted (Requirements), neither of them had either of those qualifications, when they both went through their refresher course. Id still apply.

Remember that internal specifics change more rapidly than anything published. Calling a recruiter, as unpleasant as it might be, is the best way to get up-to-date information.

So I spoke with a recruiter at Celadon the other day and was told that I would be eligible for their refresher course and everything then when I mentioned something about taking a bus there I was told that they would fly me and not put me on a bus. I found that kind of a waste when I live in far western part of Maryland, and Indianapolis is only about a 6 or 7 hour drive for me if I took my own vehicle. I'm not very fond of flying. I'm still mulling around with some other companies so I told her I'd call her back within a week or so.

How close do you have to be in order for them to give you a bus ticket? I thought they only fly people in if they're very far away, and by the I mean like the SE or SW, not a couple driving hours away. Maybe she misread something or got messed up about which state I live in.

If you do not want to FLY and rather take the bus , check out the cost and buy your own bus ticket they would likely refund you the $ as it would be cheaper than having them pay for the plane ticket.

You could look for someone close to you to drive you out and stay a couple of days - just to make sure you make it through the physical and orientation; not everybody does - then drive the POV home.
