I use Cingular and can use my phone to connect at about 4x the speed of a 56k modem. In a lot of areas, they now have their 3G service which is faster than some DSL I have seen. I had a MediaNet Unlimited plan which is $19.99 and it connects through that through the data cable. Now I have a Blackjack phone (MediaNet is $39.00 for it) and it connects to the 3G where available and it is faster than my home connection! But if I am checking my email only, I can do that on the phone itself very easily. Using it as a modem for a laptop ties up the phone when you use it, but it is a good alternative if you are in the middle of nowhere with no wireless to piggyback onto.

With a wireless router, its either secured or unsecured, with secured you need a WEP key, (wired equivalent privacy) which is encrypted, and the unsecured is "Free." You can set WEP on the router if you don't want someone ganking your bandwidth.

On the wireless cell/card front, it comes down to this, he who has the most towers wins. Your cell phone is a radio, and connects to the tower that is also a radio, so the most towers insures the best connection, especially when your driving, your signal is handing off from one tower to the next. Who has the most towers? Cingular....its not cheap though.
