    Internet Connection on the road

    Hello, to all !

Im new to the board and I have a question that should be pretty easy to answer.

How does a driver get on the internet while on the road. Is there a satelite a person can use or what?

Also, Which TOMTOM is the best one to buy for truckers, keeping in mind ease of use.

    Thanks ,Mark

internet conection comes in several different options. you can get wifi thru truck stops or get a wireless card thru your cellphone provider. both have good and bad. it all depends on you and your needs. i personally use my wireless card thru my cell provder and amm actually on it now.

I connect via bluetooth through my cell with cingular. If I get a card it will require a 2 year contract. So far it is only a little better than dial-up and about as reliable. It doesn't seem worth $60 a month.

In Iowa the rest areas along the Interstates now all have wi-fi and it works, sometimes really well and other times it bogs down with too many users.

I would rather sleep at truck-stops when I'm on the road.

Not at my house you won't. Mine is password protected. Because I'm stingy.

Just so people who set up wireless networks in there houses know. I do do this in my car, obviously not in my truck but I have had my laptop in my car driving down the street and gotten a signal so I pull over and check my emails. My neighbor has one too and I have used it. I told him one day I detected it and he was like " ya go ahead and use it" Unfortunatly in the country we are pretty far away and I have to be outside to use it, but I only have dialup at the house so I have done it

The big problem with wi-fi at truckstops is they are all different providers so you can go broke subscribing to them all or you can try to stop at only one truck stop. which i think is why flying J is the biggest wi-fi everyone likes. there is just more of them. Problem is after about 4pm you can't find a parking spot in most of them. This is when the cellular air card comes in handy. Unfortunatly I have us cellular and I don't believe they have them. at least they didn't last time I checked
