I was stuck in Oklahomo City over the Thanksgiving holiday and was there for 5 days. I have a Sprint WIFI hotspot and was told that if nobody was connected it used no data. WRONG!!! This is one of the first times I just left the hotspot on even though my laptop was only on during the day reading email and THIS forum. I have a 6 gig limit and hit it. I never ever go over 4 gig so I did an experiment. I wrote down my usage and went to bed and when I woke up I had used hundreds of megabytes doing nothing!
So, they were wrong when they told me it uses no data at all. Be warned, shut off your device when your not using it.

You need to check your *billed* data. The hotspot may be logging the "Are you there?" messages. If you can, check the usage on the company website.

OUCHIE's.. my contract is up at sprint.. considering options.. and hotspots
I don't believe it be any different elsewhere -
I like Sprint. I've been with them since cell phones came out. Now that I shut off my hotspot everything is back to normal. Just lesson learned.
