I was stuck in Oklahomo City over the Thanksgiving holiday and was there for 5 days. I have a Sprint WIFI hotspot and was told that if nobody was connected it used no data. WRONG!!! This is one of the first times I just left the hotspot on even though my laptop was only on during the day reading email and THIS forum. I have a 6 gig limit and hit it. I never ever go over 4 gig so I did an experiment. I wrote down my usage and went to bed and when I woke up I had used hundreds of megabytes doing nothing!

So, they were wrong when they told me it uses no data at all. Be warned, shut off your device when your not using it.

    dca Thanks this.

You need to check your *billed* data. The hotspot may be logging the "Are you there?" messages. If you can, check the usage on the company website.

Yes, I did verify it with the Sprint Website. You can connect to the hotspot and bring up a manager window and it shows the usage. Then you can click on the Sprint website within there to see the real usage and their pretty much the same.

skate, you have something else running

i leave my wifi on 24/7
and i have my phone, laptop, tablet hooked to it, it uses peanuts

i did have my tablet running some apps that were actually sucking up big gigs per hour

so i removed any apps i dont use and its been fine ever since

look at what may be running in the backgroud

This is key. My phone started eating data then I removed all that crap I put on there when I was bored and now it's much better.

My laptop was turned off and I watched it racking up data.

maybe someone hacked into your account by sitting there for 5 days

you do know MOVIES use a LOT of gigs?

    five days?

i am sitting now waiting till 1800 to get unloaded, i watched one movie and that was 2gigs, five days i would be over my limit

No. I was in another state and turned it on and watched it. This isn't my phone as a hotspot. I have a separate device with a display and you can watch it.

I like Sprint. I've been with them since cell phones came out. Now that I shut off my hotspot everything is back to normal. Just lesson learned.
