I applied to Conway Freight (LTL) at the beginning of the month and called last week to check on my application. The hiring manager wants me to come in for an interview as soon as I'm home (Currently OTR). I have just 2 months shy of a years experience OTR but he said he will interview me for a 4 week training vs 12 weeks training once I'm hired. How does that work exactly? He did mention a contract about staying with them a year or else have to pay for all the training myself. How likely are layoffs? How long do they last normaly? People I have talked to didn't mention layoffs but basically stated if you handle a little B.S. that comes with any job and just work hard then I'd be fine there. I don't have any experience with a Forklift or P & D which the hiring manager seem to frown upon. I don't have any tickets or accidents. Are the benefits pretty good? I know where I'm at now if I took the health insurance I would pay more after the company pays it share than I do on my own (I pay $150/month for health). Thanks for your responses in advance and feel free to list the good and bad of various parts of the job.

Went throught the apprentice full class. I didnt owe the company anything because I had a Class A license already. And yes you will spend MORE time on a forklift than driving so get used to them. I havent heard of any layoffs by me though. You will be doing a mixture of dock inbound/outbound, p/d and line-haul...

Freight has three regions, and the pay scale is different in each. Overtime rules are different as well.

If you can get into foodservice doing linehaul, go for it. I wouldn't advise anyone to come here if you want to be a truck driver depending on where you are. Alot of places you will be nothing more than a dockworker. Takes 5 yrs to top pay here anyway.

    DSR (Former Employee),
Pros: pay, weekends off, home daily(though only long enough to sleep)
Cons: horrible treatment, cameras in cabs, no breaks

Long days without breaks, they call all their employes DSR's (Driver Sales Representative) do to a loophole in the labor laws that state labor laws do not apply to sales reps, if you work the dock all day and decide to take a break after 12 hours they can and WILL fire you for stealing company time!

Aside from being treated horribly this is a great place to make money if you cant find a driving job elsewhere, they start at $20hr (or $0.42mi for LH) and work you 60-70hrs a week whether you like it or not, If you work on linehaul plan on sitting on the side of the road for a few hours every Saturday morning because they WILL run you out of hours every Friday night.

They will hire people fresh out of driving school so this is a good place to get the 1-2 years driving experience that other companies require! –
