All those drivers have been back for some time if they so chose. Been hiring a lot of drivers fresh off the street over the last few months. I think they said 2900 new employees across the entire company - that is drivers, dock, and management.

Monday 8/31 we broke the all time tonnage and shipment records. I don't remember the shipment count but the tonnage was around 94 million pounds through the system - that is huge. Considering the current economy this is impressive to me. At the hub I run, I would rather not see the dock still hoppin at 6:30 AM but I suppose these are good problems to have at this point in time. Be interesting to see the numbers for the third quarter. They're telling us we're making money so the 401K match should return.

This is just the Freight/LTL side.

The huge spike in freight we had has slowed some but the tonnage and shipment counts in my area are still pretty good. All the new hires are now up and running - this has helped a great deal. More drivers from close by terminals are running the hubs eliminating some via's and allowing the hubs to close at a reasonable time. They have cut a few purchase runs also allowing us to haul the freight. Now, we need trucks. Supposed to be getting a total of 1500 Cascadia's - 300 in 2009 and an additional 1200 in early 2010.

As far as OT, I know our city drivers still get a decent amount. It's about right for a driver right now, you get a little to boost the paycheck, but you're not running out of hours on a Thursday and working the dock all day on Friday.

I just spoke to a Freight driver in Milton who told me his hours and miles are down and they are hiring dock only workers (non cdl) at $12 an hour. He wasn't too happy with the situation.
