Going to Conway

Truckload really doesn't have a idle policy. Of course unnecessary idling is frowned upon, especially at Truckload terminals. With that you have to maintain a certain level of MPG, I think its like 5.8 MPG.
Some of the older trucks have fuel fired bunk heaters. Only the new (single) trucks have APU's, and only get those if trading out of a old truck.
They are pretty fair, nobody wants you to freeze or sweat, But those that are idling when its 60 or 70 degrees out, tend to get spoken to.

 

mustang970's got it pretty good there. I know you'll be "talked to" if you go below an average of 6.0 mpg, but they do take into consideration the circumstances.

I've been in sub 30 degree temps the last two weeks, so my truck is hardly ever off. I know my fuel mileage is bad right now, but I don't have an APU or a bunk heater, so they should be lenient with me.

I usually keep around 6.0-6.4 mpg. I know for fact that if you cut back on your overall speed ((I only do 62 max) it WILL improve your fuel mileage here.

As far as the APU's, if you do get one (some of the new people get lucky) you'll be trained and also kept to a higher mpg standard. Not hard if you do what they tell you.

If you plan on having a pet with you, they will watch your idle time pretty close.

 

I've just recently noticed some Conway ads for student drivers. Is this something new at CNWY/CFI? I was under the impression that Conway wouldn't look at anyone without at least 3 or 4 months OTR experience.

 

Poobah... they've had the training program for at least 3 years. a guy on our unofficial board started in that way and I did it just over a year ago. More recently they were sending teams to train so I don't know if it still exists with solos.

lonejustice... I've been worked pretty hard the past 2 weekends. last weekend I pulled a load from Sacramento to Denver... some 1300 miles and this weekend i'm pulling from SLC Utah to Wisconson, just shy of 1500 miles due monday morning.

 

Thanks for the reply, Mystikal. So if I understand correctly, Conway will take a newly minted CDL and put him with a trainer as a student ? Their website doesn't give any particulars about training pay, how long with the trainer before solo, cpm in the beginning, etc. Any chance I could trouble you for a little more info?

Thats correct.. they will train. Training is 7500 miles. In good times I heard it could happen in 2 weeks... I took a little over 4. It was a good thing I enjoyed the time with my trainer, huh? Then I got my truck about 1.5 weeks later.

Post training pay - .30cpm
Gain every quarter .02cpm until one year anniversary
1 year - .36cpm
124,999 miles - you jump up .01cpm to .37cpm

 

Thanks for the good info from all of you. I put in an app. with freight and truckload last summewr when I got laid off and no response. I took whatever I could find and that took 2 months and here I am laid off again. Put in an app. with freight and truckload again yesterday and got email and phone response from recruiter today and she said she should know a definitive answer by noon tomorrow. Hope it all goes through, thank god for unemployment but it just doesn't pay the bills.

 

Not sure what you wanna do, but if you want the job with Freight, it's always best to drop by in person.

 

My wife stopped into the Phoenix terminal on Friday to drop in her resume and was rather rudely told that "stopping by didn't do anything but pester them. Look online for open positions." I personally thought that was rather rude.
