I heard about drivers who got their money back after going to operations division and complained about the charge and threatened to sue co. :biggrin_25516:

Give co. a chance to fix it. If they don't, tell them you will file the complain and will get an attorney. This charge is illegal.

Everytime you idle, send macro, stating location and reason why you are idling. This way you create a record and you can refer to it later. I also add temperature where I am.

Let us know how it goes. If all drivers would challenge co., abuses like this would stop.

I checked them (Espar and Webasto). Maybe when I become an owner operator, will have one. Covenant has APUs installed in their new trucks but most older ones don't have it. Another day met a Cov. driver with an older truck who had an APU. He said he has been driving for Covenant for 11 years with no accidents, so he demanded an APU. I thought, "Heck, does one have to be 11 years with Cov. to get an APU?" :biggrin_25523:
The truck I drive now may be due for trade in soon (maybe in a couple more months or so). The newer trucks may not only have APUs but may also have eletronic logs. Covenant will receive 600 units by the end of February. That will definetely be my good-by to Covenant.

    Hi Rocks,

    Where will you go?

What I have been reading about the "new and improved" CSA 2010, etc. says that all commercial vehicles will require electronic logs.

Even if the above were not true, it does not take a rocket scientist to see that the crossfire of state aggrandizing of police power and escalating trucking corporate litigious losses will force EVERY company/corporation to mandate the combination of GPS, electronic logs, "black boxes," etc. to cull any at-risk driver before he/she jeopardizes the material strength of that company/corporation. In short, logistical companies/corporations will have to self-police and self-enforce violations to survive DOT/judicial scrutiny and the tools for survival are mandatory GPS, electronic logs, "black boxes," sleep apnea indicators, breath alcohol vehicle start interlocks, cameras, etc.

Just consider how much automated enforcement will add to the state kitty by being able to exact revenues from computerized ticketing mail-outs without the present overhead of a more personal "touch" by your friendly peace officer? You may disagree that this will happen because of the judicial "precedents" ostensibly "established" by the courts because it violates privacy. Guess again... all the legislators have to do is mandate a "Texas Two-Step" where...

    1. The vehicle owner is made responsible for EVERY action the vehicle performs regardless if he/she is the one driving.
    2. Send the ticket(s) to the vehicle owner if the vehicle ever violates any laws.
As far as "cameras" and other invasive data collection and monitoring devices are concerned, a simple inclusion of these item's required presence in a truck will be just another "condition of employment/lease." The same contractural legaleze that emasculated our native constitutional right to carry our beloved firearms (hunting, skeet and target practice) in our trucks will be reworded to include the inclusion of these infernal high-tech contraptions. Psssst... notice the word in the middle of "con-trap-tions."

To wrap this up, you may temporarily be able to move to another non self-policing company, but it will be just a matter of time. If state enforcement and civil litigation doesn't coerce corporate transportation managers to re-evaluate their thinking, sky-rocketing insurance premiums will. So, when that happens...

    ... where will you go?

    Just my two cents,
    -CT

Like you said above, I may be able to move to another co. that doesn't use all this high tech... This change is still at very early stage, we don't know how co(s). and o/os will react to it... Nevertheless, I want to believe that this change will take time (hopefully several years)... until every single co. out there and o/o will be forced to have these devices and such.
When that happens, I will have figured out something else to do (not trucking). :yes2557:

Moreaujeremy, let us know if you received that charge in print on your payroll.

    That charge is illegal.

Ask person who prepares your payroll who authorized charge and go talk to person.

If they don't pay you back, let us know.

Covenant is competing for another Smart EPA Award this year. It is A HUGE THING for them...:yes2557: A lot of federal money, benefits and recognition in the industry if they win.... But all at our own suffering expense. They get this award by torturing us, drivers. :biggrin_25510:

We have to fight back. :biggrin_25516:

My dispatcher called me today to tell me that my idle percentage last week was 3 % above their limit. But he wouldn't worry about it and I shouldn't worry about it. He said was just doing his job, had to call drivers for his report (I understand, he is just another Cov. employee like me). He said Cov. will not charge anybody for idling...

But this practice of calling drivers and sending QC msgs every week asking us to reduce idle, is very annoying. Company has to provide good, safe working conditions for its drivers and not try to force us to work and live 24/7 under below freezing temperatures. That's inhumane.

I quess I'm not missing anything from the great "Covenant". When I got to Chatt. last year I emptied out the truck and hauled butt outta there.......this winter has been harsh, and I don't know how the drivers are putting up with this type of abuse.Do you think that the top brass at Covenant and all the other companies go home and make their famillies sleep at night with no heat?
I am telling you that I do not miss trucking, I gave up my hazmat,it was useless. Also,if anyone is considering Florida as a place to live, there is no work here, and what is available pays diddly squat.Good luck everyone...stay warm and safe!
