I have not heard to many good things about CRE. However, over the years I have noticed that there are many drivers that complain about every company. So I'm going at this with skepticism when it comes to the claims of others. Anyways, here is my story. I had gone through driving school in 2001 and got my CDL. Shortly after I signed up with Burlington Motor Carriers, went through orientation, and completed 2 months OTR with a trainer. Once we came back to our home terminal I proceeded to the classroom part of the solo testing. Soon after I started my test the CEO(or somebody high up) came in and told us to close our books and that we were going to be sent home because the company had been bought out(or something like that) by Celedon. I was too young(21) and didn't have enough experience so I couldn't stay on with the new company, I did ask -door slammed shut on me. My family needed money so I took the next job offer I could find which was with Waste Management. I worked with them until I couldn't physically handle it anymore and they were overworking me anyways(making me run my large routes plus the guy they just fired for no good reason's route). I started installing satellites through a contractor with Directv.....long story short, they didn't pay what I invoiced and so I quit and drove cab until there was hardly any business to make a profit, went to school and my wife got a job. Her job doesn't pay what we need it too and I need a break from school and I'm kind of going through that life reflection stage where I'm re-evaluating what I want to do and what would bring in a decent income for my family.

Now that that is out of the way. Because I haven't had any verifiable OTR experience and it has been over 10 years since I've driven a class A vehicle everybody is telling me that I need to go through school again. I don't have the time or money to go through another round of truck driver schooling and be able to sustain what we have now(which we are barely doing). Basically I'll have to take my loans from next semester, tell them I'm taking an extended break, and leave for a company to do the training. So far, the only company that has offered me a solution to get back into trucking is CRE. Because I have a valid CDL they said I may not have to do the complete 60 day phase 2 training but I'm not so sure with everything I've heard. Either way, I'm willing to go through all that OTR training just so I can get my foot in the door, I'm tired of standing at the threshold and I need to make some money to support my family.

Does anyone know of other companies that have their own school that hires out of OHIO?

I don't plan on staying with CRE unless it works out for me. I will do at the very least 6 months or whatever time it takes to get me eligible for hire with a better carrier. And no I'm not doing the lease option, wouldn't even consider o/o without being able to buy the truck outright and have decent capital to run the business.

Is CRE so bad that I shouldn't use them to get my foot in the door?

Use a flat or tanker company to get your foot in the door. Any van or reefer company will still hire you after that but you will have more opportunities to choose from. More $ in flats and tanks too...... well usually

    Maverick will hire you.

Prime will hire you and pay you $600.00 a week while training. Choice of refrigerated, flatbed, tanker.

    Central Refrigerated will hire you.

Celadon has a school in Indianapolis, but I don't know the cost.

You need no money for Prime, Central Refrigerated or Maverick.

Some Maverick drivers that post on here live in Ohio and say they make avg. a grand a week.

Yes, usually the best annual pay will be with flatbed or tanker.

Already filled out application for Prime. I did like the $600/wk training pay. Hoping to get in contact with a recruiter soon. Thanks for the suggestions. Will be looking at the other carriers as well.

filled one out for Maverick as well. Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully I can get on with one of them. I'm not too pressed for time because I'm not planning on going anywhere until I get my next semester college loans at the end of September. Not the most honest thing to do but I will be paying back way more than that plus I'll be taking an extended break pending on if I really want to finish school; anyways, the loans will give me money to start the new job and for my family to survive on while they are waiting for the pay to kick in.

Swift will hire you and train you, but I don't know if they have an academy closer to you than Memphis

I tried swift back in 2007 got assigned a trainer andtook bus to Harrisburg PA only to have the trainer send me home because i had scabs on my face from a shingles outbreak i had during the two weeks i was waiting to getassigned a trainer. Basically i told him what happened and that this is what's left from the outbreak and that it would be gone in a few days. He didn't know what shingles was so he looked it up on the internet. He ignored the part where it says shingles is the adult form of chicken pox and only saw that it was herpies. I explained that if he ever had chicken pox he has the same thing laying dormant in his nervous system. He replied "i never had chicken pox like that.". he called his dm and they sent me home, which they could have just sent me to the hospital to get cleared, and told me to call back once i was medically cleared. I got the paperwork and called them back but nobody returned my calls and i couldn.t get ahold of anyone, i tried for weeks then gave up and applied with the local cab company.
