I worked for cre for 6 months I was a trainer for them for part of that time and I ran solo. When I ran solo they were only giving me 1200 miles a week. When I ran as a team they gave me between 4500 and 6000 per week depending on if the customers got me unloaded and how much time they had me sitting waiting.

They have a tendancy to allow larger companies such as federal express and us express whom they carry freight for to change their appointment times and you will sometimes sit there for 24 hours with no detention pay.
This has happened to me 3 times and when I inquired about it they did not resolve the detention.
    Regards,
    Nicole

I thought I had ditched all these threads about CRE, must have missed this one.
I told you Fawne that eventually CRE would stick it to you in one way or another.
1200 miles as a solo driver is exactly that. You are probably going to say no, no, no but the fact is they forced you to drive team. Hopefully you kept your original stand and did not lease. If so good for you. If not then you folded like so many others.
When you say that you were a "trainer" when all you have is 6 months experience is appalling and part of what is wrong with the industry today. Don't misunderstand me I do not criticize you but CRE (and all the other wonder companies). You have been essentially forced into this situation because of lack of enough wheel-time to go to a better company and the need to actually still make some money. Not your fault it is a subtle form of blackmail.
I am just glad that you have actually written the truth about your miles / detention and the whole trainer / team thing. Hopefully you have helped some other person to make the right choice and stay the hell away from CRE.
I think that at this point if your record is good it is time to jump ship.
Try Gordon Trucking, good company and I believe they hire from Michigan. Good luck and thx for the honesty.

I see many here are going over the pros and cons of either leasing a truck or owning a truck re CRE.
I think that owning your own truck outright and under the right circumstances running for CRE can be a winning hand. It was for the guy that I 'trained' with in '08. At that point he had been there for 14 years had done a couple of million miles and was no fool. He had been a small jet pilot in a previous life. Not an idiot by any means.
Leasing on the other hand is a losing proposition. Juggle fuel costs etc as much as you want but at the end of the day it is all about how many miles you get and how much you are paid for them.
Those that have said that as a company driver you can earn the same or even more are right.
    Sort of!
Not with CRE but out there in the big bad trucking world YES!
I aim to buy my own truck in a couple of years (hopefully the one I am in now). Certain caveats.
    1. I am paying cash outright for the truck, no payments. Very important!
    2. I have had this truck from new and have been monitoring what it will do and won't do. It isn't perfect but it isn't bad. I particularly like the battery powered AC / heater. Saves a lot of wasted fuel idling, not to mention making me legal in several states where idling is verboten.
    3. I am learning as much as I can from a very experienced OO who works for the same company as me. That is like verbal gold.

Most of the key to all this is - assuming you are getting miles in the 1st place - is truck reliability and fuel consumption. There are a ton of things that can be done to improve these 2 items that large companies will not do.
A simple example - my truck has 8 batteries. 4 for cranking and 4 for the HVAC. Stupid idea! Much better to buy 4 x AGM Odyssey batteries. Deep cycle + cranking in one package, can't spill or explode and double the cranking power of normal type 31 cells. Chuck out the 4 deep cycles that are there now and save the weight.
Much technical improvements can be made to save long term money and headaches but only if you have control of your own fate.

The last point I would make is lifestyle.
I genuinely sympathize with those truckers who are making a living but seeing their money go straight back out again so as to support a family. That is a very hard row to hoe. They are away for long periods and don't have much to show for it.
In my own case I live in the truck with no folks. This is home so if the truck is mine and I am between jobs I still have a home and if I need to burn fuel for just living it is a small amount compared to owning a house or renting an apartment with electricity, rent / mortgage, association fees, cable etc etc.
In that same area I do not have to go cap in hand to an operations / fleet dept to ask for hometime or to take more time than is allowed under their 'policy'. I have my own policy!
I met a real nice Dart Advantage driver in Dallas, TX who told me that nowadays he takes the whole winter off every year. Truck bought and paid for, does much of his own mechanics and working for a company that is essentially a glorified brokerage - a la Landstar, same difference. A very experienced guy who had backed the whole thing into a corner.
Suffice to say I think that CRE is a beginning not an end and whether a OO, leaser or company driver it is only a stopping point not the whole journey.
I think I have said enough so I will walk away again. Good luck to everyone and best wishes for the new year.

    Daimeon Green Thanks this.

So...new guy here...be patient please. What about the rising cost of fuel? Does an increase in the fuel price effect your formula? Also, you mentioned earlier about the discounted price of fuel at 2.78. I see pump prices are well over $4.00, so I don't get that either. Thanks for your post, it really helps explain the rebate program.

Only 1500 miles per week? Did you piss off someone like the dispatcher or have some issues before that which caused you to only run a couple hundred miles per day? Seems like there would have to be more to this story than being told..... but I guess everyone only tells the side that makes them look good, right?
