Hello all and thanks for taking a moment here.

Quick history: 2003 DUI will be 7yrs young this July and maybe less than one year of OTR experience. Had my CDL A with Hazmat since 97'. Last yr. I let the Hazmat go (stupid, I know).

I've been filling applications over the internet and a very eager CRST recruiter called me today concerning an app. I recently filled with them. Based on my driving history he said that I will need to pay $4,000 to go through CRST CDL driving school and about 8 months to work it all off through CRST. He's calling me back tomorrow to tell me more details and so that he can process my application.

So what's the scoop with this CRST company? I can seriously sense if people are lying to me so don't bother attempting it. For the rest of you honest folks I and my family really do thank your honest opinions here.

Below is my side of the story based on what another trucking offered me for CDL training. This is the main reason why I am asking for advice here.

By the way, I have the highest respect for LCT and other company drivers. So don't bother attempting to pick a fight with me about any of my LCT experience, k? 39 yrs young and I don't need such childish games anymore.

In 97' LCT offered me something similar as CRST has here. While going through that LCT CDL course the trainers and teachers fed our student minds with candy concerning a wonderland where newbie truckers make tons of money and home time. Basically after CDL school I let them treat me like a slave, so that they could prove to me that they were scum and they did this oh too well indeed. Because they would of kept me for 2-3 yrs (not one yr. like the CDL trainers told us) in order for me to pay off my over inflated CDL loan. At that point I couldn't wait any longer for LCT to continue it's financial lies to me anymore. I filed for bankruptcy and put LCT CDL loan on it as well. After a few weeks of being OTR... that's about over 60 stops for "one six state route" which was at a "non-stop" pace where your co-driver woke you from your sleeper birth so that you could help unload at every single stop... I decided not to come into work after that run. I slept for two days straight when LCT tried several times calling me. When I finally answered the phone they demanded that I take on another 3-4 week route with 60 or so stops or they would sue me for their student CDL loan. My response was something to the effect of, "Yeah but I already beat you to that punch line guy and here's my lawyers number, good-bye."

CRST will feed you candy till you go home with them. Difference is CRST only requires 8 months and be ready for at least one month of living expenses with no pay. Two months if you can, because after your 28 days you'll need to factor in finding a co driver and the week turn around before getting cash. Disclose your DUI on your app and to your recruiter otherwise you'll be one of those people who disappears on the last day of orientation. The pay sucks for the first 6 months but after that you start making some decent money. Good Luck!!

A cheaper way may be to find an O/O that will take you on for a year. (or more if you like it). No school to go thru again and it will age your DUI another year.
After a year OTR with the O/O, there are a lot of companies that will consider you without the refresher course.
Another option is look for a refresher course at a private school. Many will cut you a break on cost since you don't need the classroom part. You already have your CDL. Be sure and check with prospective carriers first if this is the way you choose to go tho, as many have a minimum hour course requirements...usually around 160 hrs.
