I'm writing this second hand as Ive had to bail out my son inlaw several times now. I'm an owner Operator of over 20 years on the road. My son inlaw went for his cdl without consolting me, signed on for CRST training program. HAH! bus ride to CR terminal told he go through training and 1 month of driver training after he recieved his CDL. OK. Got his CDL went through orientation before thanksgiving, (made him stay at the terminal for the holiday) Promised him a ride never happened. After his first week on the road he found out that he had to pay all his lodging while at the school, the starter pack/welcome aboard package they gave him he was charged for, plus school deductions. while training he averaged .06 mile (yes i averaged his pay stubs out). they where stuck in California for 4 days, his trainer got a room left him in the truck in a yard for the whole time.(no keys, no acsess to facilities and one hellva a walk to a place for food) came home for Christmas and is now stranded at my home! he was told he has to find his own way back to Cedar Rapids or wait here till he gets another trainer comes through our area. Now hes stuck, they make you sign the last page of the contract and dont give you a full copy of the contract, hes stuck No other company will touch him while under there contract! this is by no way to treat people, or to promote our industry. There has to be away to stop these driver mills from destroying peoples dreams and hopes!

I completely understand your viewpoint on your son in laws' "predicament", however a simple read through the forums here, or even asking questions, or reading the contract would've forewarned him about what he was getting into.

The contract itself states that he has to pay back the cost of tuition, plus lodging expenses, and the welcome pack is 24.95 or something like that.

Yes, CRST has a lack of trainers, some of them are extremely ###### trainers such as the first one I had. However my 2nd trainer I still keep in contact with, he was a good man. He leased a truck, and the truck itself had problems, but when you buy into their lease op program the truck you get, if not properly checked out is more or less luck of the draw.

Also, sure CRST itself is a low paying training company. However I've come to the conclusion that they do have their good points, such as actual guaranteed home time. They WILL get you home when your dispatcher has acknowledged your home time has been put in the system, they also have a no questions asked shutdown policy in regard to fatigue and poor weather conditions. It dosn't matter which company you choose to have pay for your CDL and get your training, as they all have their bad points.

Though I would actually say, foregoing the horrible pay that CRST offers, your son in law actually made a reasonable choice as to which company to go for, as Swift, England, Hunt, Knight, etc all seem to be if nothing else more nefarious than the Crash n' Roll Stunt Team.

Heck I liked working for crusty,.then again I already had years driving local.so I didn,t go the hoops I sent a week in class, they offer me a trainer position but I felt I needed more timd with them,.before I could a newbie, yeah I can teach.almost anyone to drive, but how do you teach anyone the paperwork.side when I didn't know it myself.yet. Crst needs to make sure thete trainers know everything about.drivinb before they make someone a trainer,.and is an extra .06 cents a mile worth my life, these schools only teach you to get a lic most need another month in real ddriving before there let lose with a full load, I had one buy crive.60 miles over odonner in first gear cause he had.no idea how to shift up or down on hills, but he knows.now.

Sorry for the typos, i'm on my.phone, it has tiny buttons and I have fat.fingers

Yeah, the majority of the trainers they have there are jokes. I forget what all of the qualifications are, but I think you need 6 months (Yikes!) recent experience, at least one winter season under your belt, and thats about it aside from a lack of tickets/accidents/infractions.

Sounds like he should have timed it better. Why would someone start right before two holidays if they thought they wanted to go home. You are either there to work or not.

He's not "stranded". He went home for the holiday. If you really are a trucker than you know nothing happens quickly in this business.

:biggrin_25511::biggrin_25515:I really don't see anything wrong here. As a student there are a few things to learn before mking real money, i'm talking 2-3 years. You say he was paidd .06 cpm his first month out?

IIRC, contract students get paid by the day, not per mile during their training period.

I get paid by the mile. As far as IIRC students. I attended Kirkwood. Pay sucks but @ 22 cents a mile for half or 11 cent a mile for every mile the truck runs.

So what you are saying is that, the miles AND the pay is split?

Me and my fiance are going to CRST either this month or in February. we are doing the train your partner program. Does anyone have any good concrete facts on that program? We know most of the basics and have talked to a recruiter and hes taking a pay cut to go with me to get my CDL. I would like some input on that if you guys dont mind. Also from this post from what im told this is entirely inaccurate. The first month you get paid $50 day. Then after your 28 days on the road with your trainer, (which in my case will be my fiance), you get paid .31 cpm (because im in the train your partner program), or .22 cpm normally. I am excited to go even with some of the bad things I have heard because yes I could choose any other company to get my CDL but I would have to sign a contract with them as well and I would be away from my fiance for a year. CRST is the only company that offers the train your partner program that I know of. If anyone knows of any other companies I am open for ideas. Thanks. Good luck to your son in law.
