I am scheduled to arrive at CRST for school in 2 weeks. Starting a 2nd career at age 65 after being in construction/self employed for 30+ yrs. I will be ready to pass the paper tests when I arrive and I would recommend that anyone going to any trucking school be ready to pass these tests prior to arrival. Doing that helps remove the stress some people feel making it easier to pass the tests. Get your blood pressure checked before you do anything because you will not get a CDL with high blood pressure and do not consume anything like coffee prior to going for your physical. Drop out rates do appear to be high with long hours in school X 7 days a week so if that is not your thing do not expect to be happy with the CRST school. The other "free" schools are probably similar. Good luck!

    Pop Thanks this.

Hi Old! I am a 65 yr old newbie starting a 2nd career via CRST. Although I have never driven a big rig I have had occasion to back trailers so I know a little about it. Maybe rookies get nervous when trying to back into a slot but I don't see where backing is all that difficult once one has done it a few times. You are absolutely correct to say getting straight when you can do it is a big help just as is picking a spot to aim for thru your drivers side mirror. Don't over steer while backing but if you do just pull forward a little and do it again. Most of all don't get flustered and make dam sure there is nothing that might wander into your path. A little practice is all it takes.

Consider Roehl Transport in WI. Read their threads. They are a great company for newbies.

We offer a 3 week Class A CDL training program in Marshfield, WI. We start a new class every week and limit the class size to 6 students that qualify to work for us upon graduation. Classes run 7am-5pm cst Monday through Friday. The total cost of the program is $3385.00 This includes the tuition fee of $2800.00. We can finance the tuition in-house with a credit score of 500 or higher. There are no payments on this loan while you are driving for us and when you have driving 120,000 solo miles, the loan is paid in full. The remaining balance of $500.00 is an upfront cost. This covers a $100.00 registration fee for the class, covers $400.00 for lodging at the hotel. You will have your own room at the hotel. The room has a small refrigerator and microwave. You are responsible for your meals and travel. After successfully completing our program, you are hired as a company driver. After class you will get some hometime and then complete our Over the Road program. You will be matched with a driver trainer for up to 13 days. This pays $90.00 a training day. After successfully completing this, you will be issued your own tractor. I have attached our program brochure.
