Just remember you are getting into a lease on a truck that has over 500,000 miles on it and the odds are its been beat up by at least one and most likely more than one student/inexperienced driver the whole time. When I was with CRST I talke to every LP I could when I was in a terminal because I wanted to go on that side as well. The most common story I got was driver's being assigned....notice I said assigned not choose.....trucks that were not in road shape..often spendng a week or 2 down just to get it road worthy....meawhile that grace period they give you to get tarted runs out before you even run a mile. The only way to really come ahead is to either team with a spouse/partner or be a lead...and do you really want a student driving a truck you are making payments on?

if you want to be "your own boss" crst is not the place to be .....had a run in with rates with my dispatcher while i was there with my own truck .....rates for the lane they wanted me to run were running at 2.60 off a load board and they wanted me to move a load from them for 1.25 a mile including fsc .....there contract stated that i could book outside freight with approved brokers which i ran 1/2 their freight and half mine .....
dispatcher told me they would not aprove any brokered freight because they had committed to too much freight in the area ....well at that rate ain;t gonna happen his exact words were take this load or sit.....wrong person here dh;d the truck from tx to cedar rapids and leased on to a new carrier the next week ....
words of caution as a lease operator there you will not be your own boss in fact you don;t even control your own maint there is a bad deal -
Never, I repeat Never get into a L/P with CRST!

I was a lease operator for crst and i also went through the lead class assuming you dont have any truck problems also assuming your trainee does ok and is a decent driver you can get along with you could do ok but big but if not it will be a disaster you cant make money solo so unless you have a student all the time you will go into debt real fast with that company if you wanna go solo go with kllm if you wanna make more money do like i did buy your own truck and get your own authority

Im a lease operator and I bring home way more then a company lead driver.i thought the same thing till they told me I would only get paid split miles. I was bringing home about $2000 a week before taxes. With all my deductions I paid $o in taxes. You can make lots of money if you do it right and get a good dispatcher. Being a lead driver is stressful though. Sucks at times when you get someone who is completely stupid and doesnt even need to be driving a car more less a truck.

So give us an update? Did you end up leasing with CRST ? And how is it going if you did?
-
A lot of CRST leased trucks are refurbished old company trucks, I've been with some of the leased drivers and they do OK ! ( about $ 2000 a week, so i been told) when the truck is not in the shop. CRST does not have many shops, so it can be a lot of down time when something gos wrong.

I would just like to say to all the O/O on this forum, by now everyone pretty much knows that owning your own truck is better than leasing, but you guys should realize that going out and getting your own truck is not as easy a feat for everyone as it may have been for you, hence why people explore the option of leasing through companies. To the gentleman who was complaining earlier about $350-$500 a week for truck payment, sir that is actually cheaper than most of these companies truck payment, example i leased with central refrigerated, my truck payment for my first truck was 565/week, the second truck was 619/week, and yes i still averaged about $1500 take home, to those who dont believe money can be made as a lease op, you are misinformed, the difference is its is ALL on you, the only lease ops i know who did not make more than a company driver are those who mismanaged their business, or blamed the company for something they could have avoided but just did not know how to avoid it, personally, i thought centrals lease program was for the most part awesome from a money making standpoint in my experience, but from what i hear of crst, i can honestly say if you run it right you should not have any problems outside of truck breaking down, and people lets face it, although we ALL would rather a truck breakdown later than sooner, the fact of the matter is its a machine, breakdowns are inevitable, you can minimize it but, its still bound to happen, doesnt matter if its brand new (break in period), or 10 years old, the ONLY difference is a newer truck is under warranty, so 9/10 you dont come out of pocket, bottom line, lets keep the banter at a minimum, if you have not leased, dont comment, this includes o/o, bc although you go through tougher things in some aspects, you STILL dont have experience as to whats going on in those situations, your input at that point is entire he/she say, or unreliable, thank you for your time, i wish to read more of crst's lease program and plan on calling tomorrow
