Have another goal of never having CRST on your radar.

UPS, USPS, UPSF, NEMF, ABF, Old Dominion, Fedex and plenty of other non crap mega carriers out their would appreciate your resume.
Never hurts to try. then have them pay for a CDL.

I had a brother in law that lived in Jacksonville and Schneider was the only one who got him home regularly. If you want to run the whole country then some of the bigger reefer companies are probably your best bet but if it's a job your after and not a lifestyle I'd check into some of the regional flatbed outfits. There's a lot of bad written about them on here too but getting home on the weekend will get you past a lot of that.

All I can thing is that this person is not informed or has other issues. There are plenty of other more reputable starter companies that CRST, England, etc...

Seriously a Marine, maybe they want more crap conditions and bootcamp or something. Wow, get out there and look. Roehl I can guarantee is far better for training and getting rolling in your own truck. Schneider, Millis, etc...etc.. etc... Or go with one of the better flatbed outfits, TMC, etc...

Why people think they are going to get a better deal than the rest at CRST or England...I just can't figure it out.

    Wolfyinc,
I actually can't describe why I want to drive. I do better on my own. I like being home, but the wife and I can only see each other so much before we want to kill each other. I think that's just a product of the circumstances we met in. Being in the Marine Corps I was always gone or working shifts where we didn't see each other and now it's how we work. I always want to improve and perfect something. Driving for me is a challenge of sorts. And I will not be satisfied until I do it and succeed at it.

I would suggest at least getting a regional job so you can be home more often especially if you happen to have any little ones at home. I am the same way I like to have some space, the DC I work at is only 50 miles from where I live and I have a personal car parked in the lot as of this week so I could go home daily if I wanted to but since I have a sleeper I just stay near work and save on gas then go home once a week for a day off.

I want to say thanks to the users that were able to help me. I have enrolled in a CDL program at the college here starting on the 6th. My GI Bill is covering everything so that's great. So now I'm studying my CDL handbook because I have to get my permit before the 2nd week of class. I'm sure with everyone's help I've dodged a bullet by not being tied up with CRST in a contract. I called them and told them I was going to attend school on my own now, and they've offered me a $1500 bonus if I'll go with them after school and another $650 bonus for being prior military. I haven't accepted or turned it down because I like to keep my options open. Stevens transport also offered for me to come to them after school. No bonus but they seem like a better company. I still have many more companies to call though.

    Shaggy and pete1 Thank this.

Research everyday, keep your eyes open in the surrounding area and pay attention to the companies you see a lot of.

Think about why these companies are offering you all these sign on bonuses, it's because they have over a 100% turnover rate ! I definitely would stay away from crst ! good luck !

Thanks. I figured there was some catch for bonuses. Plus a couple cents more per mile at a company with no bonus could net me more in the long run anyways.

stevens transport is far better from what I hear, never worked for them but I have talked to some of their drivers. I chat with a lot of drivers from a lot of companies to get good ideas about the company, you can read topics on this forum but its best to actually talk to the drivers out in the field. With any company you will see more negative posted than the positive since less are willing to take the time out for a positive comment but if you piss off someone the negative is right away. I know the drivers I talked to who worked for stevens was very happy there, not sure how honest but one guy told me he was pulling in $1200 a week running coast to coast as a company driver and being home for a day almost weekly.

There are a lot of companies so just research research and research some more before signing on with one, some will try to offer you bonus's and incentives but those should be your least of worries since a great company doesnt need to bribe a driver with a bonus to come over. Loyalty, pay and nice equipment is best, some companies even provide apu units for the drivers. Thats the only thing I hate is not being able to have an inverter or apu, if my DM ever gives me the ok to bring in my own truck to the fleet then im going for it. Which brings up another tip, do not go with a company who tries like heck to get you to lease or buy a truck, get some experience first before you ever consider it, a year driving gives you a decent idea if owning a truck is for you or not.
