Talk to the labor board in the state of the terminal you work out of. The company is not supposed to take money out of your pay unless you sign something telling them they can. Maybe you signed it during orientation. Probably not.

I've driven for a while - farm semi's and stuff, but for OTR DOT purposes and most company hiring stats, less than 6 months.

I want to go back out again, and it has been a while so I need a refresher.

My buddy was telling me I may need to go back and finish out my CRST contract (3 or 4 months) before I can get on elsewhere.
I also have heard if there was a break in driving between when I left CRST, and go to another place to drive I would be able to since I did not leave CRST for another driving position, and had a different job in between.

I am not sure if I could even go back to finish the CRST contract since it has been so long, and do not really want to.

Here are some pay stubs, which re-enforce why I do not wish to go back there.
Note the bottom where it says "Deficit"

Here is the last of them. You will see the negative paychecks, multiple - and the miles were not all that great.

That might be true and he can be terminated for it like any employee that messes up.

It is illegal to deduct anything from a persons paycheck other than the normal stuff and court garnishments without the employee's written approval. The question is did you sign something when you hired in?

If not file a complaint with the Dept of Labor. For the record it's also illegal after the fact to coerce you into signing and agreement and paying. It must be before hand. Their only recourse is to drag you through court.

Though the trainer is training you are still 100% responsible behind the wheel. CRST is a horrible training company. That sign is kind of confusing. Why do they even say axle group. It kind of sounds like no permitted loads over 18T on their drives or tandems aren't allowed to cross. Yet they mean a 2 axle truck can cross that weighs up to 18 Ton. Someone show me an 18 Ton 2 axle truck please.

Don't feel too bad I got my ticket in 2009. They have written over 12,000 tickets to truckers since 2006. Evidently RI thought this bridge on the busiest interstate in the country would last forever so in the past 50 years they have not saved any federal funding to plan and repair the bridge. Quick solution? Rape the out of town truckers. I know as far as 2011 construction didn't even start. Over five years of collecting fines. I know when I got my ticket the bridge inspector deemed the bridge safe for truck traffic but said it was so old that truck traffic would accelerate it's remaining lifespan. So it's not like it's even a dangerous situation, only preventive.

Did they take you behind that shopping center where they had portable scales set up? I think they streamlined it to a straight $3000 ticket on the side of the road. I got a $5000 ticket and got it knocked down in court to $3000. My company controlled our routing and they had me starting out across I-90 from Boston to Philadelphia. I personally called the fuel routing manager and asked him if I could go the I-95 route. He told me I could. He even knew nothing of that bridge. I saw that sign you posted and questioned it's exact meaning because it is not worded well. Like you said I watched trucks coming the other way which is what sealed my fate.

We had 3 drivers before me get fined on that bridge yet the company said nothing. Them 3 drivers quit. They took me in a backroom and had me sign a promissory note or get fired. Like you I didn't know the law back then. I signed the note as I thought it would be the admirable thing to do. I paid the company back in 7 months. I felt the company was half liable because the fuel manager approved that way and he even admitted telling me it was okay. That didn't fly.

It's up to you but you can file an online complaint with your state DOL if they didn't have a pre-agreement.

Reading on it the bridge was suppose to be completed Aug 28, 2013.

Exactly what happened to me - routed over it on QC directions per company.

I will try to find the old handbook and papers I have here somewhere and see if there is anything about ticket deductions.
Maybe someone else here will know or remember.

They did not take me to scale, they just wrote it on the shoulder and off I went.

The simple way, just do a refresher and start over; forget CRST. Later, after the refresher and gaining 6 mos. recent experience you can move into a high quality company such as Heyl Truck Lines based in Zephyrhills.
Here's a few companies that offer refresher, but there are plenty more:

    National Carriers
    Western Express
    Paschall Truck Lines
    Schneider

I don't think he can, because he has contract with crst and if he breaks contract he would have to pay back all monies due before another company could even hire him. Google crst contract lawsuits and you will see that crst has sued companies for hiring drivers that they had not been released from crst contract.

i think he needs a lawyer, and needs to contact labor board
