Hi everyone, let me say thank you in advance for any input. My husband is trying to figure out the next step dealing with a horrible situation. I will explain what has occurred up to this point and any insight what to do next is greatly appreciated.

My husband, who already has his cdl, left our home state of Washington and went to Iowa to do training as a driver trainer and take part in the lease program CRST offers. It starts bad right here, the vehicle they rented him was for only 48hrs and there were many roads closed and others in such poor condition you could not drive faster then 20 mph due to dense fog, and severe winter snow and ice storms. Even without the bad weather 48 hrs, driving that distance alone would be very difficult within the time frame given. He bucked it up and made it though, he is used to driving hard and maxing out his hours.

He did the training, got his certification. He then came back home to get stuff needed for the truck he was to lease and to allow CRST time to provide him a truck. CRST set up a date 30 days after his training to go to California to get his truck on either march 29th or 30th 2014, yes that was yesterday and today. Yesterday the student he was to train called him from where they were to get the truck and told him the truck is not there and they had no idea where it was. Hubby called his driver manager inquiring about the truck, saying he is not going to go there unless there is a truck as promised. 7 hours later the trainee called the hubby and said they found the truck but there are no keys. Hubby asked trainee for a contact number for the shop there to see when they will be able to supply keys. Hubby asked the trainee to look the truck over to make sure it is good to go since the way the lease option goes is you agree to lease a truck sight unseen. Hubby went to call the shop. Apparently the trainee did not really know what to look for and luckily there happened to be a experienced driver who checked it out for him. This driver sent my husband photos and called him..very bad news. Tires, rims and brakes horrid would not pass dot inspection and were unsafe. Leaking oil all over. 5th wheel rusty and damaged, rust all over truck (2012), power steering was bad, Engine block cracked, in an accident was damage to front and side and appeared to have a bent frame.

My husband did not pick up the rental car they reserved and drive there do to the truck. There was no one available to speak to about this situation and the driver manager did not return his call.

Question is what to do from this point forward. The money CRST is offering for driver trainer is very good, but with that said, this situation sends red flags about the integrity of this company. They will not pay hubby his $500 training / sign on bonus nor reimburse him the $200 in gas for travel home until he is under a load. He can't get under a load without a truck!

Ok all you experienced and intelligent drivers......help!!!! What is the best course to take now????

I realize you're out $200 in gas at this point in time, but is that REALLY that much with the truck they're giving him? It's a LEASE he's going to pay to maintain their junk and NEVER own that truck when it's all said and done. I'd run like the wind if I were y'all CRST doesn't pay any better than any other carrier that leases trucks out to drivers it's a way for the company to get rich and a way for them to screw people over bottom line. They pay what like .97/mile+FSC so it's about 1.40 to the truck when it's all said and done? That doesn't go very far when it costs almost 1.20/mile just to run the truck. It's a way to go broke quick, I'd say run...Fast and far from CRST.

Lawyer up. I say this because you would expect the truck to be atleast road legal and in good shape. But, first red flag might have been the you get the truck without seeing it. Of there was no signed contact, run and don't look back.

What 379 said. If he is really set on working for CRST he should tell them he wants to be a company driver and still train students. Forget leasing.

Exactly Very VERY well said DrivertoBroker. I would never train a driver in my truck, hell I have problems letting anybody even move my truck let alone drive it across the country. From what I'm gathering hearing how great the money is yet another person has fallen into the scam of lease purchasing a truck, their eyes get really big because they're going to "be their own boss" and they're going to make "big money" when in reality they're going to lose their behinds.

I'd be very careful on what this random 'experienced' driver told your husband, what matters is some people over exaggerate big time. Red flag number one is a rusty fifth wheel, the plate will rust when exposed to moisture. How is it damaged? I'd rather just see the pictures than try to rebuttal everything. It seems a bit sensationalized when all the tires, rims and brakes are bad... When you say damage to front side, what kind of damage are we talking about? With out pictures these claims are skeptical...I hope it works out, let us know what happens. Thanks.

Bad tires: Did he measure the tread depth? Are there cuts, bulges or ply showing? Are the tires flat?

    Rims: ARe they cracked? Bent?

Brakes: Are they out of adjustment? Below 1/4" lining thickness? Covered in grease? What?

We need to see pictures and more details. BE SPECIFIC in everything.

I will post photos asap. The driver who examined it said oil leaking all around engine and stream of a lot of oil running down the whole frame. Just reporting what was told to us, not trying to mislead anyone, not my intention.

Have your husband read the post on this forum about crst. Eat the 200 bucks for gas and move on!
