Very informative thread good pros and cons, I'm looking to lease on with them as a owner operator my truck is paid for, I'm out of the Chesapeake Va area. I have a good idea what to do and what not to do. Thanks for all the insight please be safe on the Roads, God Bless You All!

The only bad thing about them is their maintenance account for the lease trucks and maintenance in general. I found out that when they change the oil in their shops they use remanufactured oil. As far as the account goes once you pay into it that money is no longer yours. Even if you quit you don't see any maintenance money. There is also a baloon payment at the end of the lease. Other than that malone isn't a bad place to lease a truck. I have been making decent money, but I also heard of drivers that get behind because the truck they get is a real pos. All of the trucks that are lease trucks come from the expedited side, so all of them are team driven. You don't pick your truck or trailer. I am thinking of going somewhere else.

Bottom line is....IF U HAVE NO EXPERIENCE IN FLATBED,DONT ##*K W/CRST.The 1 week of orientation & 2 days of load securement training IS NOT ENOUGH for 1st timers.....They are gonna keep getting people hurt/killed & their CSA scores will suffer forever,NEVER get pre-pass/ez-passes. I completed the class,and on the last day they tell us 'we have no trucks available' and tried to send us to team/van division for 30 days.And they didnt tell us till tha last day that they had people n motels from classes b4 mine that had been waiting for WEEKS to get a truck.So then they say 'we'll pay u for ur time until we get u a truck'....BULLS*IT! 3weeks later....im still waiting,got ONE payment of $236 and NOTHING else.They are BY FAR the most unprofessional trucking company i have ever delt with & everything i read on here b4 i went was TRUE! They gave me a bs excuse for not paying me my money because i wouldnt drive 800 miles to get a truck that I HAVE TO PAY FOR,SITE UNSEEN & PROBABLY NOT D.O.T READY,but you have been paying the people n tha motels their money?!?!? gtfoh! I was just gonna use'em anyway to build my expense account b4 i bought my own truck,but they are so messy,i didnt get a chance to even get n a truck.While i was waiting on those CLOWNS,i had time to go to BOYD BROTHERS for TWO WEEKS of training...BEST MOVE I EVER MADE! Classy gang over here,top of tha food chain,fuel bonuses @ the end of the month are almost half of my morgage payment....i cant complain.CRST Should be youre ABSOLUTE last resort.....If u can get pass all the BS & have a lil experience,u can make $....just dont wait on them...DO IT YOURSELF,ITS UR TRUCK,U HAVE TO PAY FOR IT,HIT THA LOAD BOARDS,cause they dont give a #### about YOU....I PROMISE U THAT.

The only thing I know about Malone is what my good buddy tells me and shows me when we hang out. His net income after expenses and after paying taxes I might add was just north of $80,000 last year. He also only ran about 50,000 miles last year. So just going by what his tax statements say. He brought home and put in his pocket right about $1.60 a mile last year. Some drivers get excited just to see that as the gross revenue. Im not saying everybody can do this, but there are some out there that can. Now I will add that he did not have a truck payment for most of the year. But he did buy a new(used but new to him) truck last year as well, for cash. This is what happens when you refuse to haul cheap freight and dont mind sitting your arse at home or in a truck stop for days.

It isn't about how many miles you run but the rate. Some owner operators still chase the miles rather than the rate. Many are scared to sit for a day in order to find a good paying load. They then complain about the cheap rates. It still amazes me at how cheap some will operate their equipment, just to keep their truck moving.

I was leased on to Malone from 09/05-09/06 as an O/O. I grossed $178k that year, but due to poor planning on my part, I got greedy and took loads to dead zones. Had I not done that the couple of times I did, I would have grossed well over $190k easy.
There is a learning curve to this. Here are a couple of not so secret "secrets":
1. Buy a truck, don't L/P. Go downtown or look on CL for a decent $20k truck. Be prepared to do an in-frame in one year or less, so save up an additional $20k in the first 8 months of operation to do it.
2. DO NOT ignore maintenance on your truck or equipment!!!! That is your business, treat it as if your family depends on it. It does.
3. Pre-plan your loads as far in advance as you can, it is 100% YOUR responsibility to make things happen.
4. Stuff will break, loads will cancel, delays will happen. Suck it up.
5. MEMORIZE all of these. IF you cannot live by simple steps stay a Company Driver, you will be much more comfortable.kiwi23 Thanks this. -
